Necromancer Colony Sim is an incremental colony sim. You are a necromancer trying to rule the world. Start from nothing and build a kingdom of Skeletons to conquer the lands.

Feedback

Hi Steven,

Great work on this submission! It was simple yet elegant, and I had a fun time playing!

Here’s my feedback from this submission:

  1. Good work on simple controls; and the timing of the click-downs are good
  2. There were some small subtleties, such as the icons being the same for chopping wood and gathering stone that should be different. You could potentially use a CDN icon library to keep the size down while streaming - although full transparency I’m not sure if that was included in the rules so not going to consider it for grading purposes
  3. It would be nice to have some sort of limitation to how many actions can perform at once outside of Mana. This would give it more of a realism feel since you’re a single necromancer starting out.
  4. Good job on the overlay tooltips! Very useful for when icons were not exactly explanatory
  5. I’m not sure if it’s a bug or UI, but I wasn’t clear on playing the purpose of incrementing the wood cutters and carpenters. I guessed should be to increase productivity, but I didn’t notice productivity being increased at all. Might want to look into this
  6. Good job on folder structure on the repo, but please make sure to add a Readme!
  7. Also suggest adding linting and prettier to make it better for community contributions and personal contributions from a code standard perspective.
  8. Good job on file naming!

Overall, good submission - keep up the good work and hit me up on twitter @jedihacks for any discussion!

It's always amazing how addictive a well-executed clicker game with simple UI can be. This ramps up at a good speed, and the variety keeps it interesting. Well done!

Really cool game. At the beginning it felt like a clicker game, but then as soon as you were able to research a whole world opened up and I realized where you wanted to go with this game. I really like the simplicity, but still you need to think a lot on how you want to use your resources and skeletons. Some sounds would have been really cool. I am not so sure if I would rather make the items which are not yet available at least viewable. It would help a bit to understand to what you are building. On the other hand it is also exciting to explore the different buildings on the way. Very well done. I had fun playing it.

Resource management? Colony building? This is my kind of game!

The only thing that is a bit annoying is the tooltips covering the options above.

Solid game!

Thanks for the feedback. Could I ask what exactly about the tooltips covering the options above was annoying? Was it all tooltips or only a certain group (like just the Action button tooltips)?

Fun clicker! I admit I'm not the biggest clicker fan, but this looked so nice, that I hacked it to go quite a bit faster so I could see everything you've built. I appreciate the pretty ASCII art, I like the depth of the tech tree, and I had a laugh at the theme. Great job!

This game is incredibly complex and rich. The tech tree is quite long and you need to read a lot to know what your plan should be. I had some fun playing for a bit but the GUI and some bugs depleted my enthusiasm.

The GUI is lacking a bit. It's not fun to have to scroll up and down all the time. This could have been solved with a grid layout or any number of ways.

Some things didn't seem to work well, or worked in weird ways. I created a militia but that didn't seem to have any effect. The villagers attacked and pillaged my resources. And when I developed the warehouse, the max amounts didn't increase. It's only vaguely related to the theme.

Cool clicker/idling game! Emojis were fine for me. really cool when all the research-locked items appeared and the game opened up. Also liked how at end it came back down to basic resources, so you had to pull all your skeletons off everything else to produce stone and planks. I was never able to fend off an attack, until I made a special effort at the end, but it didn't seem to trouble me much. Music might have gotten repetitive, but maybe some sound effect?

The tooltip got on my nerves - it could use 1-2 seconds of delay. There isn't a significant difference when a button is inactive - a bit more contrast or colors and a mouse pointer could help the new player. Most emoticons didn't work on my PC - an emoji font can be used as an external resource via @font-face - it's allowed as long as the game works without it.

A nice simple game. Frantic watching many progress bars deplete and clicking them to move on to the next stage.

I ended up just clicking boxes where the progress bar was back down to 0, not sure what I was meant to be doing or if there was an end goal?

I like the minimalistic approach (art-wise) and that the action of the game mostly takes place in ones fantasy, like a pen&paper game.

The tooltips are a bit to big, and on Windows some icons are missing, resulting in guessing whats needed for a build...

But i played it quite some time, and was entertained :-)

Thanks for the feedback. Could I ask what exactly about the tooltips made them feel too big and why that was a problem for you? Was it all tooltips or only a certain group (like just the Action button tooltips)?

Works best on Mac as Windows was a bit dodgy with the emojis for stone, wood etc. Once I knew what I needed to do was quite addictive and was determined to complete the game; something nice about stat / clicker type games.

The page layout was good and the ascii art was great!

Critique

  • Tool tips got in the way a little on the wood and stone collecting
  • Took a long time to get all the resources needed to win
  • Battles could have played a bigger part in the game
  • Losing a battle; didnt take much damage or lose much
  • Sounds missing

Overall a solid entry, enjoyed playing thanks.

Thanks for the feedback. Could I ask what about the tooltips getting in the way on the stone and wood collecting was a problem for you? Was the same thing a problem for all tooltips or only a certain group (like just the Action button tooltips)?
