Will Meme-Coin See Increased Gaming Use in 2025?
Memecoins are cryptocurrencies made purely for entertainment purposes. They can often command high prices and come with celebrity backing. We discuss if they will see increased use in gaming during 2025.
Cryptocurrency is volatile at the best of times, even when you are trying to predict the movements of established coins like Bitcoin and Ethereum. When it comes to meme coins, this increases. Yet more risk provides the potential for larger gains. As new coins arrive quite regularly, getting statistics and historical analysis on these is almost impossible. However, there are some indicators that meme coins will see increased use in gaming and subsequent price rises in 2025.
TRUMP Coin
To date, the primary blockchain for meme coins is Solana. Two of the most established meme coins on this chain are Dogecoin and Shiba Inu. However, plenty of new meme coins may arrive in the next year after a few high-profile releases by key public figures. One of these is the returning US President Donald Trump.
Named simply TRUMP, it first appeared the Monday before his inauguration. On the first day of its sale, the Trump coin price rocketed to around $75 in its first day. At the time of writing, it has settled somewhat at around $26. This has made it the 25th most valuable cryptocurrency on the market. It has a market value of around 8 billion, though about 80% of the coins are owned by Trump and the team behind the coin. However, with his comments on the integration of cryptocurrency into mainstream finance buoying consumer confidence, I am not surprised to see a second push for Trump's own cryptocurrency soon.
Trump himself has admitted he did not know that much about the coin, stating, "I don't know much about it other than I launched it, other than it was very successful." However, he was also informed that it had raised several billion dollars, though this is unsubstantiated. It is not the first time Trump has made a foray into digital crypto items either. He has previously created a series of non-fungible tokens that showed him dressed as a superhero, standing in a variety of poses.
What Is a Memecoin?
Memecoins are a digital currency that is created in response to online trends and memes. As they don’t have any real fiscal use, they are extremely volatile. However, as a product of internet popular culture, their value is dictated very much by trends and popularity. This is very similar to the value of art. With communities of online fans, they can offer significant returns if purchased at the right time.
Memecoins are generally coins that depict a popular character or theme. The community of fans around them helps build their growth. They rely on blockchain technology, provided by Ethereum or Solana. This distributed database allows the tracking of these digital assets. They differ from other cryptocurrencies in that they are totally a popularity-based trading item, unlike Ether, which is tied to its blockchain. Due to their volatility, some countries have moved to regulate the use of meme coins.
How Will They Impact Gaming?
There are already moves to integrate meme coins into useful gaming scenarios. Placing meme coins in this field gives them a much more stable long-term foundation, which could crucially change how they accumulate value. Instead of relying on popularity alone, meme coins could be used in a game, which could use the trading of the coin in the game's ecosystem and between fans.
If these meme coins are given to people when they play, further value can be added. They may signal achievements unlocked or high scores reached. This provides them with value beyond market speculation. All of these could then be used to unlock special content, such as skins, items, or new stages.
Finally, integrating meme coins into gaming extends the reach of meme coins themselves. This opens them up to fans of the game, not just people who are online crypto investors. With a low barrier to entry, this would increase the market reach of meme coins.
Unfortunately, so far the only real games that integrate meme coins have been lower-level, casual titles. Dogecoin has a lot of these: DogeDash is a runner-style game you may find in app stores. Tamadoge is much like a pet simulator, where you have to look after and grow a famous Doge dog character. Shiba Inu Wars is one that is an online multiplayer where people battle using Shiba Inu dogs.
If more mainstream games can integrate meme coins, then these benefits can be reaped. However, this may also require a change in approach from major developers and platforms like Microsoft and Sony who may not want decentralization. Celebrity coins, like TRUMP coin, will make meme coins more well-known. However, they need to offer value to customers before they will be integrated, bringing it full circle. For now, they remain volatile, which is why many people will stay attracted to their ability to create huge amounts of money quickly.
