You are a galaxy famous space pilot
Until one day...
Hitting walls will make you go even faster. Your brakes have been sabotaged. Yet, you must finish this race in 13th place.
A racing game where you must finish last. Use the mobile controls or A/D+space keys to make sure you don't overtake any of the other racers.
I hope you enjoy the faux 3D graphics, the wacky concept and levels, and the music, in this game which gave me great joy to create and tweak.
Feedback
I really like the graphics for this game, though the LEFT and RIGHT at the bottom of the screen did nothing. My only real issue is I don't know how to lose.
Sometimes, hardcore gamers find it really hard to lose at a game! This was the major challenge in my game.
Nobody else reported any issues with the left/right buttons :/ I wonder what browser you're using!
You failed by succeeding.
This one is unique. I really liked 3D visuals, every level is new one so want to progress to see more. In the end of the race I learned melody by hearth. Reversed gameplay made it more interesting and not just race to get top1. Punching your opponents was fun, I wish there was a possibility to slow down somehow to wait for your opponent if you failed.
Great work.
Thank you, and congratulations for your successful failure!
In the director's cut version I won't let you slow down but I'll reset the level if you pass someone.
Really enjoyed the graphics! Especially the rainbow road 😁
Fun concept, and great simplicity. I enjoyed this more than some of the games with more gameplay.
Thanks for your comment :) I'm adding some more gameplay today for the director's cut version.
Interesting concept, and I can see how it wasnt easy to code using a regular canvas2D.
The gameplay was weak but the presentation was neat.
Thanks for playing!
Yeah, I ended up shipping too soon. I might add to the gameplay later.
fun game and lots of lights, no idea how to maintain the 13th place to win but the navigating is easy and colorful. good work
You have to hit racers you're getting close to in order to kick them forward. It turned out a bit too opaque, unfortunately :(
Nice retro-artstyle and music, could be from one of those machines in Flynn's Arcade :-)
Thanks!
The graphics are very charming and the plot and concept ultra funny. Well done!
Thank you!
Well, from the 3rd time I was able to successfully fail and present a new yacht to my customer :D (How to get a yacht for yourself? :)).
I felt like I was in a trance, similar to the feeling of not blinking your eyes for a long time in childhood, but on the contrary straining so much that you start seeing glitches in front of your eyes :D.
Very good work with colors, good contrast where you don't get lost. I also like 3D. The hard turns were quite hard :), but in the end I really liked them! The background on which snakes are crawling is very cool! The music was also well immersed in the process!
It is quite innovative to finish last :).
I liked the idea and the story, it was fun and I laughed - I love it :).
I would like to be able to be overtaken by those whom you have overtaken, thereby maintaining uncertainty until the end of the race :).
The only thing I would like to have simply as an option is the ability to turn on/off the music, but luckily the music here was really good :). And also fitting the theme, if I want to finish 13th, then I love the number 13 and dislike all the other places, which is the opposite of the theme for me :).
As for controls, I'm assuming you're using "e.key" to find the key. In this case, if my OS language is not English, then this code will not work for me. I recommend using "e.code" instead to avoid this issue.
Cool timer for the month in the last location!
Very impressive game, I had fun, I laughed - congratulations!
It would be great to be overtaken by other drivers -- or for the mechanic to be more clearly told to the player!
Sorry about e.key -- I didn't know! But it makes sense. I'll keep it in mind for the future, thanks for telling me.
Thanks for playing :)
I like the twist of a racing game in which you have to do your worst and finish last :) I didn't fully understand, however, what to do when I approach NPC racers. Am I supposed to run into them? If I do, the game says "SUCCESS", but I'm not sure what actually happens then. Do I push them forward and then catch up to them again?
Are there other ways of slowing down? If I accidentally advance to the 12th position, can I somehow go back to being 13th? And since the game is about trying hard to finish 13th, I guess it's a case of Triskaidekaphilia :)
The graphics are great, reminded my of Skyroads a lot. I really liked the abstract backgrounds, and the upbeat music matched the gameplay, too. I just wish I had a bit more control over steering. As it is right now, it feels like I'm mostly going straight all the time.
There's a lot of potential here, and the style is great. Well done!
You made me check out SkyRoads! What a trippy game :)
Yes, you need to run into other racers, which will kick them forward. You can't personally slow down (the sextillionaire, he has removed your brakes), only transfer your speed into others' rear ends. It's a bit of an issue with the gameplay!
As you mention, it's not currently possible to be overtaken by another racer. I might add a challenge to the director's cut, where someone comes from behind and you have to dodge them or yourself be kicked forward.
I don't understand what you mean by going straight all the time, but I do agree there are problems with steering currently. I think the track might be too thin.
Solid entry, I did write up a much longer reply but it seems to have been lost.
Reminds me of the PS1 game WipeOut, really nice level changes and ship.
Lots of fun to play through even though the controls are a little tough at times.
I think the theme didnt quite help you out here, some other mechanic might have made the game more interesting, once you miss a player you have failed already.
What inspired me to make the spaceship look and move like that was wipeout. As a kid, I played a demo of wip3out over and over again, so it was very easy for me to spend time coding the movement of the 4 2D coordinates that make up the ship.
I agree that you fail after you miss a player. I probably could have restarted the current level with a "FAILURE" message if that happened, and the game would have been better for it.
Thank you for your comment!
Well made game with trippy visuals. Pseudo 3D elements are nicely done (especially the ship). I don't know if fisheye effect on walls was intentional, but it adds a charm to the game. Music hits hard.
I wouldn't be surprised to find something like that released in the late 80's, early 90's on Amiga or PC.
Thank you for your comment! I did work a lot on the ship's movement :)
The fisheye effect was intentional. It looks weird and wraps around to the top of the screen sometimes, but I didn't fix any visual glitches that I thought added character.
OK, I won,... so I failed :) I don't know if it is possible to finish at the 13th place, but I was not able to! I found the concept original and loved the changes of colors at each step. I think more curves would benefit the game and would be more spicy to the player. Nice work!
Congratulations on your failure!
It is indeed possible to finish in 1st place, as well as 13th place, and you get different endings, though neither is easy to achieve.
I agree it needs more curves, perhaps even easy ones that don't cause a warning sign and can be concurrent with other events.
Thanks for your comment :)
I really love the vibe you have going on, with the graphics and the music. Amazing.
Gameplay wise, there's not a lot to do, as during most of the time I'm just there sitting waiting for something to happen. Also it seems that once you pass to 12th place, you basically lost already, and there's nothing I can do to do back to 13th place.
Yeah, it gets boring sometimes :'( I might fix it in a "director's cut" version.
That version might change what happens to you when you overtake someone. It may be game over, or restart the track. Or neither! I might implement a challenge where you get someone else to overtake you.
Thanks for your comment :)
I worked hard and helped the quadrillionaire get a new space yacht! Clever writing. Fun graphics, pretty trippy. There was something very smooth about the line drawing algorithm you used for the outline of the ship, and the ship had a nice bounce effect after jumping. Nice job!
Thanks for your comment and your hard work!
The line drawing was just HTML5 canvas .stroke() but it looks interesting because I added a brightness filter to the player. Though I wish that canvas could draw pixelated lines like mspaint :(
Nice intro screen. Love the narrative build up. The graphics are fun, and the music is immersive. Love the rainbow road "level"
Needs a "pause" button, and I'd be good to have an in-game "pause" pop up menu so you can restart the game, the track etc. Be great to have some sound effects when you go into walls etc. Not sure if game would need something to show how far "into" the game you are. I'm playing with no idea of how much left on each level etc.
I like the "tutorial" stage where you let players know the controls etc.
Some helpful instructions in your GitHub README, if you build it out a little more would be even better!
A pause menu, sound effects and some game status information would probably be good to add indeed. I might add it to the director's cut version!
After I read your comment I added some stuff to the README, so it should be possible for others to understand the source code and build process.
Thank you for your comment!
The game plays great, the graphics do look really 3D so congrats on the effect.
It’s really sick and smooth.
But can’t for the life of me figure out how to slow down.
The sextillionaire, he took your brakes! That's the justification I came up with to remove the brakes. You have to collide with other racers and make them go faster than you, though the game never tells you! 😅
I appreciate your comment on the 3D. It took a long time to do and I'm pretty happy with how it came out.
I thought the story was great😁 , audio goes really well with the game, and premise was really good, however things fell a little flat on the game play and controls. Solid entry. Also, I'd like to take this time to encourage makers/players to play the entries out of order!
Thanks for your comment :)
For the music, I guess I just found something that worked well and fought the temptation to "improve" it because I know where that would lead.
The gameplay and controls should feel a lot more fun. It seems like the ship isn't that agile right now! I might change this in the director's cut version.
You've encouraged me to shuffle the DOM in the games page so I would see a diverse set of games!
(() => { let main = document.getElementsByTagName('main')[0] let shuffled = [...main.children].map(elm => ({ elm, rand: Math.random() })).sort((a, b) => a.rand - b.rand) shuffled.forEach(({ elm }) => main.appendChild(elm)) })()
Wild graphics! The game looks awesome. The way the ship turns and jumps also feels very natural.
Good music, too!
I think the course could have had a bit more variation, perhaps? I could "go straight" and be fine for a lot of the race
But anyway, this was a really stylish submission! Nice!
Thanks for your comment!
I put a lot of love into the ship's movement :) it's not real 3D, instead I draw 3 triangles after manipulating their 2D coordinates according to velocity, jumping and other inputs.
The course could use more variation, yes :) I would like to improve it in the future.
Thanks again!
