Very impressive 3d platformer. And the music is lovely too! The 9 lives is a nice touch, although it feels a bit too easy and laid-back because I did not see that many lanterns lol. But it’s an enjoyable game, halloween theme is a bonus.

Thank you! You’re right about the easiness, it was meant to be a more chill exploration game, sort of like an early Mario 64 level where it’s more about exploring and finding stars than dying to enemies or the environment. Turned into a full game this would change in later levels of course, but ya that was my thought process. Also meant I didn’t have to kill the cat :)

Honestly, I am completely mind-blown with your game. The level of polish and the fact that you pulled this off in under 13KB is incredible. This game could easily get into the top 10 — I can genuinely feel the amount of work and love you’ve put into it, so congratulations on that!

\n

One small problem I noticed is that sometimes [insert issue, e.g., the camera feels a bit too tight when moving in narrow spaces / it’s a little hard to tell where to go next]. If that gets smoothed out, I think the overall experience will feel even more fluid.

We loved the game so much we beat it twice! The music is very cheerful (though some percussion instruments would be a nice addition). The SFX for collecting the witch were a bit irritating as they’re too loud, but the cat’s meow is adorable. We spent a while trying to get a game over, and it’s charming that there’s no traditional ‘you failed’ screen. A great touch would be if the cat, after eating all the pumpkins, just plopped down in a food coma :) The movement animation is top-notch and the controls are very responsive. Huge bonus for including shadows! Fantastic job!

Thank you so much! Regarding the witch sfx, just to explain my intention, I tried to mix the music to be a bit quiet in the background, since it was repeating constantly. I also played the game next to youtube videos and spotify to try to match up the sfx to the volume of other things you might be listening to on your computer, and then played the music a bit softer than that.

\n

In hindsight, of course since the music is playing initially, and the more subtle sfx like cat walking and jumping are also quiet, I can obviously understand someone turning up the volume for the music…and then the meow/witch sfx is too loud.

\n

So ya, with the hindsight of this comment, perhaps its better to make the mix more even anyway? But just wanted to explain my intention, even if it maybe didn’t quite work out the way I wanted for you.

\n

Regarding spring, while I did consider it, as the game is based of Spyro which does have sprint, in Spyro you sprint so you can headbutt enemies with your horns. For a cat that doesn’t make sense, so I went in a more Mario direction, which I do think is more standard which is you don’t have a sprint button, instead the player just moves at a decent enough pace to feel good.

It’s very impressive to make a 3D game in 13kb, I really admire that and your cinematics; the theme is well fit and the game overall is great. Thank you! Regarding the camera, I’m not sure I fully follow. The only thing I can think is you are expecting more of a third person shooter style game where wasd is strafe/move, and mouse is camera. In a game like that, the camera never moves unless you move it.

\n

This game is setup with a camera like Spyro, or Mario 64’s “Mario” cam (the default Lakitu camera is a whole other thing). And just similar to other third person non-shooter games where it’s not about aiming as much as exploring. In these games, the camera looks toward the player, and follows them. I specifically also tested out Dragon Quest 11’s third person camera as well, which also behaves this way. This setup lets you can without having to manually control the camera too much, or even not at all. I’m using my usual El Cheapo gamepad (0e8f:0003), a PS2 knockoff, and there were two little issues: The dead zone was too wide; I had to push to about 50% before the cat responds at all. And the right-stick axes were reversed, so moving the camera around was awkward. But still, supporting gamepads at all is a big win in my book :)

\n

Another thing is the music, charming as it is, it got pretty repetitive. I imagine there wasn’t much room left to double or quadruple its length, but that would be something to do in a director’s cut, maybe?

\n
