Connect the yurts to the farms!

\n

Left-click and drag to place paths and re-orient your yurts. Right-click to delete path segments.

\n

Heavily inspired by Mini Motorways by Dinosaur Polo Club. And by 13th century Mongolia!

\n

Mobile is a little small and fiddly, but the ‘Fullscreen’ button puts it into landscape mode and is highly recommended.

\n

Sounds are generated on-the-fly, so each guitar twang and path-placing thud is ever so slightly unique.

\n

Graphics are all in SVG, the UI is mostly HTML, and there are a whole load of CSS transitions. There is no canvas!

\n

Special thanks to Kang Seonghoon for RoadRoller (my asset-less source code is 191kB, which I think might be a Js13kGames record lol), Maxime Euzière for the Karplus-Strong algorithm that I sort of nabbed from his MiniSynth for the sound effects, and Steven Lambert for Kontra.js - the game is now using very little of it, but starting off with an engine was super helpful!

\n

Also thank you to everyone who tried out the game over the last week or so, it’s been great seeing your scores, screenshots, and yurt-organization strategies :)

Super relaxing, very good looking game!

\n

I would add a speed-up button definitely.

\n

I’m not sure if I’m missing some end-game strategy, but it seems how far you survive is very impacted by RNG - sometimes yurts spawn in places that are too far to reach (even destroying other roads to have more “blocks” wasn’t enough).

\n

Perhaps instead of ending the game when an animal isn’t taken care - that animal would die and the game ends when you have too few animals to feed everybody - that way would make it feel less punishing, and the chaos would start growing until there’s really no way to save the situation - but overall, very cool :)

Practically perfect. I think I might have spent an hour playing this while watching videos. Super chill, looks great, and the quasi random string plucks reminded me of an ambient Koto groove. Absolutely awesome.

Super polished! Despite the concept comes from Mini Motorways, it’s incredible to make such game within 13kb. Besides, the graphics, animations and transitions are well done. Great job!

Very chilled game play until you see the timers ticking away and you are almost helpless! Really well made, nice UI and interface all really polished.

A post jam version where you have more input into the game would be great, at times I was waiting for new paths and could not input much into the game loop. More game options / upgrades etc would be great.

The only bad point is that, sometimes, it feels a bit unfair (too RNG based?).

Awesome that no canvas is used. Gameplay is really nice and satisfying! Sound and graphics are great, too!

\n

If I can find anything to gripe about:

\n
    \n
  1. \n

The first time playing, I couldn’t figure out how to feed my fish. I noticed the grey dots in my second playthrough, though.

    \n
  2. \n
  3. \n

It seems like when I connect roads, settlers don’t always come out of one of the yurts? I can’t immediately figure out the mechanic there.

    \n
  4. \n
\n

Overall, really cool game that I will continue to mess around with :)

Easily one of my top games this year.

\n

I felt the audio was a bit too annoying at times, which is the only minus point.

\n

The graphics are beautiful and the animations as so fluid. Bonus points for making it SVG only in the DOM!

\n

I love that it stays super faithful to the minimetro/minimotorways style (even with the losing screen!).

I have no idea what the goal of the game is, but it’s beautiful and I like it a lot. It’s zen. The sound effects are spot on, the UI is beautiful, and overall a great presentation of the game. The controls are great too (I only played on desktop.)

I think it’s impressive that you were able to create this without a canvas. I will be looking at the source code to see how it works. Full score from me.

absolutely amazing! the art, the sounds, the smooth inputs, the great curvy line merging! what a perfect version of mini motorways. this might be my favourite game I played this year at js13k, but perhaps because it duplicates a masterwork of a commercial game, perhaps a bit too closely. but in all the great ways that I loved about the original. I like your take on it, with animals and yurts instead of cars and driveways. I really like how new areas slowly spawn, and you get ready for it to finally appear. such a great project. nice work!!!

Thanks for the positive feedback! Aha, yeah that’s a rare bug - the more you restart, the more trees don’t get properly cleared, and then ponds don’t spawn because they can’t spawn on the invisible trees, and then when a fish farm fails to find a pond to spawn in, that error occurs.

\n

You can work around it by refreshing the page after every few restarts, or you can play a fixed (post-competition, still <13KB) version at https://burnt.io/tiny-yurts

Requires some careful planning, although there is scope to reroute paths after they’ve been built which is great

The audio and visuals suit the zen atmosphere perfectly, and the challenge ramps up at a nice pace taking you comfortably from a calm gardening-like experience into a stressful time sensitive puzzle game.

\n

It took me a second to realize what to do since it didn’t seem like the people were doing anything different when they turned around inside a farm vs when they harvested from an animal. It took a minor insight to connect the (!) and the person being there, so if those were more connected in some way, or if the person pulsed a bit at the same time the (!) disappeared, it might be helpful.

\n

Once I figured it out it was fantastic, and it otherwise was an intuitive and interesting game. Great work!

This is just incredible! Connect your yurts to the animal pens in order for your people to tend to them. Animals get grumpy if not tended to, so you have to connect them quickly, or its game over. You only have a limited amount of paths to use, however, so very careful planning of the routes is required. You gain another 9 path segments in January, and believe me, you’ll find yourself sat there, frantically watching the months tick away, praying for the year to end, just to better connect your cows, goats, and fish!

\n

Graphically, this is stunning. It’s entirely SVG and CSS, which is a feat in its own right. A side-effect of this is that it did tend to slow down once I had loads of villagers and yurts on the go and not much room left on the grid.

\n

The sound effects are random and gently plinky without getting annoying. The presentation is top-notch and I know it’s “just” a js13k version of a very well-tested game (Mini Motorways), but damn, it’s still done so well it deserves full kudos all the same. Exceptional.
