Clone of the classic card game Truco! One major difference: a card numbered 13!

\n

This card loses to any other card. However, it mimics any card in the deck until you play it. Only when you drop it does it reveal it as a 13.

\n

You might think you have a strong hand, only to discover that you were better off not raising the stakes with such a weak card.

\n

But beware - don’t let triskaidekaphobia get the best of you!

\n

How to Play

\n

The game is played with four players: two opponents and one teammate, whom you can distinguish by their colors.

\n

At the start of each round, you receive three cards. To play a card, drag it forward to drop it into the current round. The other players will do the same.

\n

The highest card wins that step of the round. Next steps starts by the player who won the last step. Repeat this process until all cards are played. You win the round if:

\n\n

You can also drag a card backward to discard it as a hidden card and hide your strategy.

\n

Card Hierarchy

\n

The cards are ranked as follows, from lowest to highest: 13, 4 to 7, Q, J, K, 1, 2, and 3.

\n

Trump Cards

\n

In each round, a “turned card” determines the trump cards - cards that beat all others. The trump card is the card immediately following the turned card in rank.

\n

Unlike regular cards, trump cards don’t tie. They override all other cards and each other, depending on suit. The suit order is as follows: diamonds, spades, hearts, and clubs.

\n\n

Raising the Stakes

\n

If you think you have strong cards, you can raise the stakes! Each round typically awards one point, but raising the stakes increases the value to 3, 6, 9, or even 12 points.

\n

The 1st making 12 points wins!

Oo, I finally won! I’ve never played Truco before, so there are a bunch of things to learn. First, the card hierarchy is quite different from any card game I’ve played before, including subtle changes such as Jack being higher than Queen. Second, the trump card is decided by flipping one extra card up, while most games it is determined by the first card played. Third, I didn’t really understand that the “13” card only becomes a 13 after being played, which is quite sneaky. At first I didn’t like the 13 mechanic, but then it started working in my favor, so I decided that I liked it in the end, haha. After getting through the learning curve, this game was quite fun. I imagine this could be a really fun fast paced drinking game. Nice job!

\n

For anyone else reading this, the Wikipedia page on Truco is quite interesting, and helped me understand the game: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truco

Yeah, I explored some of these challenges in the postmortem (https://github.com/michelts/thirteen-truco/blob/main/docs/POSTMORTEM.md). It contains video-demonstrations that could be useful for those who are not familiar with the rules.

\n

This game is a great choice to break the ice on parties!

Thanks for the review and also for the vite plugin you wrote, that was really helpful! :)

I like the feel and look of the game. The sounds are great too! I have it admit that I didn’t“t know if I would like the surprise element of the cards at first, but after fully understanding everything it ended up being okay!

A fun card game.

\n

I’ve not heard of truco before, it’s an interesting combination of luck and skill. The first round I played I won without realising why. I got better as I reviewed the scoring system.

\n

The graphics were good, and felt like playing a real game of cards.

Nice graphics and 3d simulation.\nI’d never played Truco before, it took some time to understand a bit. 13 can arrive anytime I think, nice suspens addition to fit the theme

Pretty graphics! It was hard to track the hierarchy and get used to not using an spanish deck (Truco is pretty much the national card game around here (Argentina)) but once I got around it it was a nice implementation!\nJust a quick tip: It looks weird when you drag and you can see the text elements being selected. Add user-select: none; to your body css to prevent this!

I thought of using the Spanish cards look and feel, which I think is very prettier, but it would be probably more challenging for players not used to that card style to grasp it.

\n

I have friends who struggle to play truco when I use a Spanish deck myself :)

Thanks for the suggestion about preventing selecting text!

I do not know what does the revealed card under the deck means.\nIt is my first time of Truco so I dont know what does it mean by “raising the stakes” tho.\nI have never drawn the 13 card so I never get to experience the “mimic” function which sounds fun.\nOtherwise, I like the table graphics you need and the nice title screen you make here.\nThis is like a fun card game I can keep figuring it out.

Trying to play Truco feels extremely weird without the Spanish deck (and all the missing “nomenclature” like envido and such, which I honestly don’t know how to translate into english). Also I feel this is one of those games you really need to play with other humans to fully enjoy it.

\n

I like a lot the idea of the added mechanics with the card 13 but I feel it could make more sense in a game that is more commonly known (and better fits the French deck).

I see what you mean about the Spanish deck, I might add it as an option in the post-competition version. This makes sense on Europe. Here in Brazil, on the other hand, the French deck is more popular. Its funny that my friends had a hard time understanding my Spanish deck :)

\n

The rules are a bit different from other variations, probably a lot different from the Spanish one. Even here in Brazil, there are several variations. I recorded a video with a quick demo in case you are curious!

The graphic, look and feel is really impressive. It could be a casino game already. The sound effects are also nice, but I had to turn off the music (thanks for adding buttons, that’s something I need to do myself.)

\n

The controls are good, but it was sometimes difficult to drag the card on the board, maybe having larger “collision” boxes would help with that.

\n

The video with how to play the game is helpful, because I don’t know the rules at all, but I still didn’t understand why I won sometimes. Maybe it would be easier if I knew Truco. I think card games are fun, and I would like to play this game more once I have a good grasp of the rules.

Theres some really interesting and obscure html/css/js going on here. Lots of little details I havent seen implemented before - like the cards blurring out. And I noticed the text was highlightable on the cards, even though they are rendered in a fake-3D perspective. So TIL there is a ‘skew’ method in CSS.

\n

I have never heard of ‘Truco’ either, so a bit to learn there. I like how you added in the curveball with 13 too, which really makes you fear the number 13. So a solid use of the theme.

\n

Thanks for rating my game too, fun to see another poker-like game in this gamejam!

Woaw, it is a good looking card game! I was not familiar with Truco, but you did a good job porting it and adding your own twist on top of it.\nIt has sounds, fine controls, AI, 2 player mode, etc. For a game that is less than 13kb, it is quite comprehensive!\nThank you for submitting it.

I’m not familiar with the game Truco and although I read the instructions several times I still didn’t really understand why I would win and lose some rounds. So I can’t comment on how accurate it is to the card game. However, consider this is 13KB and you managed to have an AI player, or multi player, music, sound effects, a lovely 3D style game board, nice graphics and what felt like a solid core mechanic there - that alone is just amazing. And for a change, it was on-theme! Unlike so many entries this year you genuinely did fear the number 13 appearing.
