The controls are just tapping and mouse.
\nI wanted to design prettier tiles, but ran out of time.\nThere is is also no sound, so do not panic, your speakers/headphones are ok.\nI think it’s kinda playable, but not more than just a prototype.\nOnly worked on this during the first few days of the jam and then I had other stuff to attend to.
\nI tried to leave the copilot prompts in the source code as much as possible.
\nHere is the text of the startscreen in case it doesn’t fit on your screen.
\nThis mysterious reef is constantly\nchanging, but somehow the shape is\nalways a polyomino of 13 squares.\n\nThe many tourist boats are damaging\nthe reef. It is your job to chase\nthem away by gently tapping on them.\n\nBoats can only move back and forth.\nRed boats are above the reef.\nWhite boats are not above the reef.\n\nIf there are no red boats left,\nthe reef is safe.\n\nGood luck!\n\nTap on the boat to start...\n\n","source":"supernapie/js14-1k-2024","stars":1,"comments":[{"at":378886439,"author":"Cliff Earl","login":"Antix-Development","gh":17822130,"text":"Strange game. I couldn’t make any progress and nothing felt like it was having any effect.
\nRepeating the game scene all over the screen was weird but could have worked better if the one in the middle was brighter or something. It was a bit confusing to begin with. Then it also scrolls the entire screen about which is totally whacko.
\nStill, an interesting concept that could have been much better if you were able to invest more time. Next year :)

I like the ideas and the controls. The game played very well and it was rather soothing with a twinge of anxiety! Great work getting this game together.

I got used to it within 2 minutes. I will say that its a pretty fun game, but I can’t seem to mentally connect it to this year’s game jam theme.

There’s something sokobanish to it, but since boats can move back and forth, it doesn’t invoke that sense of dread when a box would be pushed in a corner, so that’s good too. It was difficult to gauge progress, but re-reading the readme made the objective clear at least.\nTricky puzzle, but did manage to get to the #1 display on a re-play.

\nFirst I started trying to solve it in a random way, but then began to think about the moves and came to the solution, which was a nice feeling of accomplishment.
\nAs you mentioned yourself, it could of course use some more polishing.

\nThe graphics were good.
\nOne I realised the map was duplicated things were a bit easier.
\nIt would be good if you could rotate a boat without having to go all the way to it’s limit before turning around

\nChallenging puzzle, controls are efficient and the scrolling following the active boat is a nice touch.

\nWe can feel it’s a prototype, but I think you’ve mastered it very well. The mechanics are kinda fun and makes me wanna see a few puzzles with it.

\nGreat work on having a working game for js13k! The puzzle works well and the wrapping of the world was really interesting. It took me by surprise on the first levels with the “Aha!” that I was focusing on the wrong side of the boats.
\nIt took me a while to get started and as you mentioned, this was not part of your plan, but worth noting.
\nAfter some levels though I managed to get into a brute-forcing mode where I just got the sense that the boats could move and if they were stuck I just needed to move the line blocking them to some direction, and repeat the action until everything was unblocked and in place. There was a flow to this but I couldn’t keep going on once I had this method figured.
\nI hope you will find time to work on it, it feels different and has something going on for it.

If you repeat those steps (even in a random way) you will indeed always eventually solve the puzzle, because you are doing the same thing the script does when it generates a level. Only backwards. For the moment any boat can also reach any tile (I think). Some variation on the movement of the boats (or what is underneath the boats) would help to challenge the players who figure that stuff out.

The audio and visuals left a bit to be desired, but that is of course understandable. Still, the main idea of puzzling together how to get all boats to not be on top of the reef is fun one. Good job!
