A bit of a different take on poker!\nFeaturing CRT visuals, sprites/graphics generated in-game (no image textures at all!), mobile support, and some whacky NPCs which feature a stunning guaranteed (>1) amount of lines to bark at you.

\n

Making a smart opponent which can play various hands proved too tricky in the end, so for my final entry I pivoted the game into a ‘play the highest card’ type of challenge. The opponents and game constraints should get a bit more difficult as you progress.

\n

Mouse/Touch to play.\nMobile Supported!\nWhen the game round starts, click the deck for an overload of information (game instructions)\n*some bugs for sure

\n

Thankyou for testing & playing, I look forward to playing everyones games!

\n

I didnt have time to add all the AVAX WEB3 features I had hoped in the end. But you will need to imagine - there was some NFT badges and progression until I tore the guts out of this trying to get it under 13k.

Oo, really like the look and feel of this. The pixelated graphics and CRT effect are a nice touch. The resolution may be a bit too low, because it was sometimes difficult to read the number on the card. The final score of my first playthrough was 659. This type of game makes you realize how much UI code is required for a card game. Well done, congrats on submitting.

Thanks for the feedback, appreciate it Cody! Solid final score too. The best I have done so far is make it to Game 7.\nThe UI was certainly a lot of work - and something I wanted to focus on this gamejam after my last gamejam attempt failed due to a lack of UI implementation/setup (I’m using no framework here, just raw JS). So focusing on developing my own custom UI class this gamejam paid off (all buttons/images/text are all managed by one UI object class). I agree the cards are still a bit too small. I feel like even if they just expand a bit bigger when you pick the cards up - that would help with readability :)

I was expecting Balatro =) With this cool effect and cards, very stylish.

I haven’t fully got the rules and played as normal poker, finished with 1600 points. Does the list of viable hand get updated and highlight what I already used?\nHaven’t seen 13th card yet =( Will try again soon.\nGreat entry, love barks and visuals. Want to build card game myself now (with CRT filter).

Thanks Alexey, yes very much Balatro inspired! (been playing plenty of it myself lately).

\n

Unfortunately I didn’t have most of the poker hand detection code in the final version. A lot of it had to be cut, and a lot of it was only half working. So a pretty last minute pivot to just dealing with ‘High card’ only. Probably the biggest part of this game I feel is lacking, because I really wanted to at least have pairs and three of a kind and flushes/straights working in their simplest form (+ the opponent able to play those hands too)

\n

The 13th card was a special card too, which also had to be mostly cut in the end. The high score needed to defeat an opponent now basically ‘activates’ the 13 card (but this card is not added to your deck as I originally planned). Originally I wanted it to be added to the deck once unlocked, and when the 13 was played in a viable hand it would defeat the current opponent & that’s how you would progress. So what is in the game currently is a very simplified version of this.

Not sure I got the rules right, but made it to the game 10 :) Feels like the highest card beats the opponent all the time.

Correct! Just high cards are counted now.\nIts a simplified game from what I was aiming for, working currently on a post-jam version which will include the web3 stuff I was working on + more challenging poker hands.

Loved the art style and animation of the game.

\n

At first I thought the rules would count the pair of cards for highest value, but looks like it only cares which of the 2 cards is the highest? One round I played two cards and the opponent only played one card which matched my highest card in number and suite, which ended the game in a draw. If that’s the case I’m not sure what the point of playing 2 cards is.

\n

The small text on the cards was difficult to read for some of them (such as the Q), especially with the CRT effect. Also not sure if it was intended, but I was dealt 2 Ace of Spades in a single game so handily won that round.

Thanks Steven, youre right it only counts a single high card right now. I was very close to having pairs, two pair, three/four of a kind and flushes added as well, but just ran out of time (and bytes!)

\n

Working atm on a post-jam version which will have a bit more depth in the gameplay as I originally hoped to see (including a proper 52 card deck rather than purely random cards which leads to duplicates). If only that Ace of spades pair counted!

I love the look of this game, you’ve done a great job. Animation also worked well.

\n

I tried the game on mobile and there were a few quirks.

\n

It wanted to run in landscape mode, but when I rotated the X and Y axis didn’t rotate accordingly. Maybe I should disable rotation?

\n

Also when rotated not everything fitted on the screen, some elements like buttons were so close to the edge that I couldn’t click them.

\n

I’ll have to come back to this game and try on Desktop

\n

Shame some features had to be dropped.

Thanks for the feedback Jasper!

\n

Yeh mobile has some difficulties I couldnt entirely solve before the jam was over. The game forces itself into landscape mode on mobile, and I have found auto-rotate on a device will then mess up the X/Y axies. So yep youre right that atm your mobile rotation needs to be disabled. And some sized screens might not scale well, more testing & some rethinking required there.

Thanks Michel, appreciate the feedback.\nThe mobile version does have its issues yes. I didnt put much time into testing mobile and it shows. The cursor issue is a tricky one, I tried a few times to fix it but had to go with an approximation, which is likely tuned to my mobile screen size and wont work for some other mobile screen sizes. So not very ideal there. But I am keen to get this template fixed up and working better for future gamejams, having mobile and PC support in the same build is what I was striving for, and its very close to working.

Clearly there was a lot of work put into this game. The sound effects are great and the vibe is overall well polished and cohesive.

\n

However, I found the art style really hard on the eyes. I wish I could turn off the “CRT visuals”, they are honestly horrible. Add to that the very minimal font which is already really hard to read on its own, and that fact that the game area doesn’t expand to the full screen, and my eyes were pouring by the end of the game :(

\n

I’m not sure I fully understood the gameplay, but basically i’m handed 2-4 cards over the course of the round, but I can only play 2, and then I need to be lucky that my opponent doesn’t have a higher card. While there’s a small amount of skill involved, the game is very lucky-oriented, which is honestly not my cup of tea.

\n

I didn’t understand the connected to the theme, besides the highest card being 13.

Thanks for the feedback João. The CRT effect certainly isnt for everyone.\nI had it in mind to add a CRT toggle in the options, which is mostly setup in the code already, but just ran out of time at the end. So more visual options is certainly something I could add to future games.

\n

And yes, gameplay doesnt have as much depth in it as I wanted either, thats my main regret with the final entry! I was originally wanting to add all the common poker hand types, but in the end I had to pivot and only base it on high cards in order to have something to submit.
