Of All Trades is a game about information sharing in the 13th century. Today we don’t think about how easy and ubiquitous skill sharing is due books, internet, etc. The game’s goal is to show how difficult it would have been to find and apprentice under the masters of various trades at the time. Instructions: Click on the isometric image to move around. When your character is aligned directly with that of the next tradesperson in your apprenticeship list, you automatically learn that skill. Some skills let you traverse different terrains. When you complete the entire list of trades and meet the lord of the lands, you win the game. There are 25 fiefdoms in a grid and each fiefdom is 200 x 200 blocks. Tradespeople will be out wandering the countryside but generally you will find them in settlements (homesteads, farms, villages, towns, and the main city).

Very interesting game in terms of the concept, the gameplay and graphics (I liked the style).

\n

It was a bit hard to understand how to move around at first but once you understand it, it’s less of a problem.

\n

The game has a very board-game feel to it (which I mark as a positive!)

\n

I got a bug with one of the trademen - I couldn’t train with them :(

\n

EDIT: I came back to this game and figured it out, there was no bug - it just wasn’t obvious that you had to learn the trades in the correct order!\nI was luck in the first few that ended up being the right order.

\n

I wish the game has a some feedback sounds or some tunes.

Sorry, your game just sat at “loading” and my browser kept reporting that it was slowing everything down. Nothing happened and I couldn’t even open a dev tools window to see what was happening.

I’d like to put more time into this and complete. Quite adictive once you get going.

Ok, this was actually fascinating! I really like the concept, and the way it ties into the theme is unique and really thoughtful. I made it up to miner in the list before I bowed out.

\n

I like the way it looked in general, but I think you could have had a larger display. I was squinting at the map, and the apprenticeship list was still mostly scrolled off screen at my resolution. A larger map, and the list to the side would have helped!

\n

The inputs are also hard to learn initially, the transparent overlays don’t immediately make sense, and the graphics don’t make it clear that you’ve got 8 way movement on a grid. At first I thought they might be hexes! I’d suggest the direction buttons should be always visible, should be the same size in a circle around the map, and I’d have greatly appreciated keyboard input too.

Well, a little complicated game, UX is not so great\nLooks like you need a pen and paper for checking all info and wondering.\nAlso you need more clear information about position and directions I think.\nBut the idea is bold

I ran out of time but the original goal had been to include a second map of the actual current fiefdom instead of just coordinates. That might have helped what you were snagging on in regards to directions. Thanks for the feedback!

I spent time to understand how to play this game, it was not so obvious. I love the concept, the graphics and all the details of this word! It is not a casual game: one probably needs lot of time to complete it. I would have loved a cool/slow music background.

What a great game. It contains a lot of interesting features actually: biomes, 3D topography, detailed descriptions of each trade person. The use of emojis here is very clever and not distracting. The game loop is essentially navigating around the terrain to reach the next village, which might have become boring if it wasn’t broken up by all the interesting items/npc type things that gave you a bit of flavor text. Some music and maybe keyboard controls would really elevate it. I finished the game, but the text at the end left me wondering if I missed something. Is there an Easter egg hidden somewhere?

There is an easter egg/alternate ending! Great deduction! Yeah, essentially ran out of time for music and controls but really glad you enjoyed it :-)

The graphics are neat, the map is huge! Took me some exploring to start finding people and to get the the waters edge.

\n

A little tricky to line yourself up with the mobs.

\n

took me a little while to work out the controls but once I had was easy to move about. Some help finding the first person would be useful so players know what they have to do next.

\n

Feel I need to come back and try this again to give it a lot more time.

Thank you for playing and the feedback! The game is always supposed to start with a person very close to you that gives you your first directions. That may have been a bug if they weren’t there. Sorry about that.

Really cool concept and a unique implementation of the theme! Executed in a really neat way as well. Makes for a very interesting experience!

\n

Exploring the world and looking around for craftspeople to apprentice under is really cool. However, lining up with a person to talk to them when you’ve found them can be quite difficult. There were times where I found someone but they always seemed one block away from me, which made progressing quite difficult. The list of people to meet also takes up quite a large part of the screen that could’ve been used to make the map larger and easier to interact with.

\n

However, all in all, a really unique idea made into a really unique game! Great job!

I would’ve loved to have audio in the game as it would have immersed the player in the game, especially when you’re travelling around the blocks.

\n

In terms of game innovation, its pretty special as you don’t have a lot of free roaming games on JS, not to mention within a 13kb build. It is a huge map, and there is potential to expand this further.

\n

Might be also interesting to implement a save game, as gamers would be able to revisit from previous progress. Seems challenging to finish the game in one go.

\n

Control wise, if we were able to control the player by using keyboard and see the character walk from one block to another.

\n

Graphics - some animation of the player roaming around would’ve been a nice touch.

Hi Vivian!

\n

First off - I REALLY enjoyed the concept of this game. You make a good point about the ease of knowledge in which we have in today’s era, and I found this game concept to be super thought provoking. Bonus points for originality.

\n

Here’s my feedback!

\n
    \n
  1. Good work on both the isometric design and fog of war. Isometric design is more difficult than regular 2d, so bonus points here for taking that leap successfully!
  2. \n
  3. Good job putting a mini-map in; however, I felt that the mini-map wasn’t very useful. I’m not sure if it was a bug or just not finished implementation; however I didn’t find it changing in any intuitive manner. A mini-map showing places that were discovered would be helpful; although you’d want to redesign I’d suggest
  4. \n
  5. I’d suggest improving the documentation and layout of the tradesmen list - it wasn’t apparent that you have to discover them in order at first, and I saw other comments say the same thing
  6. \n
  7. Music would have been a nice addition to the application
  8. \n
  9. Really enjoyed the small details of the characters and their ‘personality’, such as the woodcutter missing fingers and the birds chirping. These were all nice touches, well done!
  10. \n
  11. I’d suggest making this a responsive game where the list is on the left-hand side and the map and gameplay is on the right hand side.
  12. \n
  13. You can enlarge the display of the map & sprites without showing more of the map; and this would likely be a lot easier for many folks to read and enjoy.
  14. \n
  15. I’d suggest moving the text and dropdowns outside of the apprentice list, and instead make it a separate ‘interaction window’. 9. That way the list is their goals, and the interactions have their own section of the UI.\n10.Great work on folder structure for your application!
  16. \n
  17. Include eslint, prettier, and stylelint into your repo so there’s standardization.
  18. \n
  19. Bonus points for adding a picture and todo to the README 🙂
