So you’ve found yourself lost in a maze with chickens running rampant?! Find your way to the exit and see what challenges await you in the next room.

\n

Use your computer arrow keys (or WASD) to navigate. Push objects around to make a path for yourself. If you have ended up in a position that is impossible to get out of, hit R to reset the level.

\n

And oh, be afraid of the small room with the 13 chickens! It looks impossible to escape, but you can get out unscathed if you are quick enough.

\n

Naming

\n

Niwatori (鶏) is the Japanese word for “chicken” (the animal, not\npoultry). I named my game using a Japanese word to pay homage to a game called Sokoban (倉庫番), which originates from Japan and plays similarly to Niwatori.

\n

Inspiration

\n

A game I made in college for a game development project course inspired Niwatori. I was unfamiliar with Sokoban until I started building Niwatori for js13k 2024. Perhaps I played a game as a child inspired by Sokoban, which inspired my college game and now Niwatori.

Special thanks

I want to shout out the following artists:

Cute presentation.

\n

I found annoying that I couldnt distinguish the pushable objects from the non-pushables. Having different icons would have helped.

Brilliant puzzle mechanic! Some levels are positively devious, I love it. Great art choices. Chickens!

This is the puzzle I wish I had invented.

Solid entry, quite challenging puzzles, got close but stumped on the first large level.

\n

With more time could likely get through the bigger level, was fun to play. Nice graphics, cute chickens!

\n

good job

Very clever game. I need to come back to this one. The chicken/slime interaction is a super clever twist on the classic formula. Well done

Fantastic game design and very difficult to master. It is a lovely puzzle game that stumped me a few times! Great work!

A fun little game of pushing blocks. Having blocks that could only be pushed horizontally or vertically was an interesting twist on sokoban. Not sure what the chickens were doing, as they seemed like blocks, but could have moved more to change the dynamic.

\n

The gameplay area was quite small on the screen, perhaps you could scale it to fit?

\n

I got stuck on the level with the slime, but it was fun trying to get out.

Fun sokoban game, I liked the interaction between different types of enemies + the unidirectional blocks. Definitely made for some puzzles that I haven’t seen before. Nice job!

Got stuck on a level with 7 chickens in the corner :) Nice puzzle game with cool graphics!

Missing some zoom on desktop and music (perhaps kontra size is limiting a lot). Congratulations on the submission, good job!

Intresting game, good art style it would be better to have it bigger at least for full hd screens

Great twist on the sokoban theme. Interesting levels.\nOnly nitpick is that pixels have variable width on my screen, making graphics a bit “cheap”. devicePixelRatio is usually to blame.

A really solid puzzle entry, I liked the idea of the carts being only pushable on one axis though it took a while to figure that out. Adding a 2-3 tutorial levels with one sentence of hint below it would be quite useful I think, or on an intro screen, showing and explaining the elements. But overall I really enjoyed it, great work!

This looks so lovely! But the puzzles get really hard quickly! ;) Well done!

PS: I remember the original Sokoban the 80s! This is a really worthy homage!

Nice puzzle game and chicken art.\nBut sometime it was a pain to know what I could push or not.\nIn first levels I was able to push everything, not after, and sometime it’s frustrating when I try a path and it’s locked by design.

The game is really cute. I wish it was a bit bigger though? I know some times pixel art looks weird in some sizes, but i personally prefer when games use the whole screen.

\n

While the art is quite lovely, some animations need a little polish in the transitions. The game also looks pretty static. I was expecting chickens to move around a bit to give the game a bit of life. Also, if the player is most of the time facing forward, why is the sprite always looking back?

\n

The puzzles are interesting and get pretty challenging (although i didn’t finish them all yet), and I found the difficulty progression to be very good. The first level is dead simple, and you introduce the elements one by one.

\n

I missed some music and sound effects.

Nice puzzles! Music/SFX and some graphical effects would be a nice addition

This is a nice looking and easy to play variation on the classic Sokoban theme. Some things can be pushed, some only in one specific direction, and of course there are chickens and slimes in the way. But hey, all is good, as you can push them too! The objective? Reach the exit.

\n

Graphically it’s super cute with a good use of sprites, but would benefit from scaling to the browser window size IMHO, because at the size it’s rendered at, it’s quite hard to see which items slide in which direction, and a mis-slide can cause a carefully planned level to need restarting.

\n

The addition of some music or fx would really elevate it, too. I’m not entirely sure this is on-theme, but hey, it has 13 chickens in it. So for that alone, I’ll give it a (small) pass :)

I love Sokoban games and all push & move puzzles, and Niwatory perfectly gives the feeling of this kind of games.

\n

The thing I liked best is the different behavior of the various elements, which include carts moving horizontally and vertically, baby chicks and amoebas.

\n

Good game, and I really appreciated you listed the artists who provided you the graphics.
