This entry has a solid, unique selling point. It strongly reminds me of Animal Well—specifically, its focus on discovering secrets through organic exploration. While this might have been unintentional, (of course I didn’t read the instructions) it’s a major strength. I would highly recommend leaning into these secret mechanics and making them a core pillar of the game’s identity.

Interesting idea, but a little strange to have to day several times in order to get the wings. I liked the idea of dieing to get something, but it needs to be part of a mechanic, not just - die several times to complete the level -

\n

Anyway, I loved the atari graphics and the cover

The retro vibes are strong with this one!\nYou combined an interesting mix of gameplay mechanics.\nI manages to finish with spending “only” 76 cats :)

Nice simple but retro gfx!

Cats laying eggs though? :D

This is one of the most bizarre games I’ve ever played, haha. It’s awesome!

\n

On level 3, I actually didn’t understand what to do until I came here and read the comments. I was trying to build a ladder out of dead cats (never thought I would write that sentence). Maybe slightly more handholding would be good? Although, at the same time, I also like that you explain nothing and let the player figure things out on their own.

\n

Otherwise, the music is amazing, the graphics are very cool, and the levels are fun in the sense that you can sacrifice cats to get wings or try to strategize and save some of your nine lives.

\n

I went through 60 cats and 76 eggs apparently

Eggs, because, of all the things that might come out of a cat’s behind, they’re the least offensive. :)

A nice and interesting game! And you are among the few who properly handle keyboard events, so I can play with “search as you type” enabled. That does not happen often, so I really appreciate it.

I’m curious about “search as you type”. Presumably I got that right because I stopPropagation and preventDefault the key events after consuming them. But would feel better to be sure of it… Is that a browser feature? Something I could find documented somewhere? Thanks for pointing it out!

Interesting game concepts. The first couple of levels were the most difficult, because I never imagine getting new super powers after dying a lot. It was a fun way to experience the challenge though, as I got an aha-moment. Once I knew the mechanics, the rest of the levels were fairly easy. The flying mechanism was a bit difficult to control at times, but with some practice, I understood how to navigate even the smallest corridors.

Pretty nice game overall, I really like the idea of having to revive to clear the level; though there was a level I couldn’t finish because I didn’t understand how to open the door. I couldn’t hear the audio, but seeing how others said it was great I gave you a good note. I only think you should’ve added a bit of in-game explanation for the mechanic. The game is already impressive overall, congratulations and good luck!

Audio might have been blocked by permissions, sometimes you have to click in the page, or some combination of clicking and refreshing, to convince the browser to allow it.

Spoilers:

\n

By door, I take it you mean the purple walls? They disappear when you touch the white switch. In level 2, after throwing the switch you’ll be trapped – the only way to reach the door after that is to have laid an egg somewhere outside the trap.

\n

Thanks for playing!

I found the controls a bit difficult. In level 3, I couldn’t manage to climb by using the cat as a platform: it feels almost pixel-perfect, and sometimes you either fall through or miss the spot. Improving the hitboxes could make it smoother.

\n

I kept going after reading the comments to discover the powers, which is a great idea, though it’s a bit of a pity that it isn’t introduced more naturally (having to die 8 times to unlock a bonus is not something players usually expect).

\n

The game reminded me of Total Party Kill, which is a nice reference!

What a fun original idea to have cats laying eggs! I like the graphics and sound, and I appreciate that you included gamepad controls. It takes serious commitment (and a willingness to impale yourself on purpose on the very same spot over and over) to not give up before the wings appear. I would never would have figured out how to play properly without reading the comments here. I feel silly for not trying harder! I should not have given up so soon! the clue is in the game title! nine lives! use them wisely! seems almost obvious now!! lol

\n

That said, despite perhaps needing a little tutorial, the game is lovely, the movement is fine, the levels are interesting, and you did a great job. Thank you for joining js13k!!!

A fun game with an interesting mechanic

\n

It took me a while to realise that the eggs the cat was laying was set to a respawn point

\n

I only got a few levels in until I got to a level with no key to unlock the barrier and no obvious way to get round or egg laying place?

\n

Still, an enjoyable experience

There’s actually two kinds of barrier: One for switches and one for something else

\n

Spoiler:

\n

The way to open the other door is to lay all eight eggs. At that point, the Egg button performs a completely different function.

Incredible game, everything here is very good : nice graphics, enjoyable music, and very original gameplay perfectly fitting the theme.

\n

I got stuck a little bit on level 3 because I didn’t die enough to discover the wings, but apart from this little hiccup I found the gameplay very well thought. I didn’t understand the egg part at first, but the whole “lay an egg and sacrifice yourself to help your future self” reminds me of Blair and I love it.

I also love how you can use your corpse as a way to render the spikes useless.
