Welcome to Mor Chess
\nA chess puzzle game about building chess positions by following a few simple rules.
\nNote: When you place a second piece of the same type, the piece on the lower rank will be marked with a ‘2’.
\nWarning: Your progress won’t be saved if you refresh the browser, so be careful.
\nHave fun, and happy solving!

It took me a while to fully understand what was going on with the rules and the ability to navigate between 0-0, 0-1, 0-2, while also being able to click the “Next” button at different times. With the later stages it was difficult to understand what the actual next rule was meant to be when all the other lines with symbols suddenly appeared and I ended up resorting to trial and error.

It doesn’t seem like normal chess rules and legal positions are followed when validating the rules. Either that or I didn’t understand something about it. The icons were honestly a bit hard to understand and the “equations” look confusing. Also from level to level, it would be nice if the new rules appeared separately.\nI don’t understand the interaction with the red puppy/cat. It turned green. and got sad when I clicked on it.\nThe music was a bit too harsh and loud.

The game wants you to create certain relationships between them (like ‘this piece must attack that one’).
\nThe rules are shown as an equation: Target Relationships = Actual Relationships. Your job is to arrange the pieces so that the ‘Actual’ list on the left matches the ‘Target’ list on the right.
\nThe symbols are showing the meaning of the relationships like which piece is on the board, how many attackers it has etc.

\nIt took me some time to make sense of things at first, and the objective list quickly feels cluttered and congested. The icons for block/attack are also very similar, which makes them hard to distinguish at a glance. Because of this, I often found myself hovering over elements to understand what’s happening, which made it harder to keep playing even though I enjoyed the core mechanics. Adding some horizontal spacing between objectives and current conditions, plus more distinct colors for the icons, would make everything much clearer.
\nThe music could use some improvement, and a placement sound would add nice feedback.

\nUpdate: I tried the game again.
\nI carefully read the rules this time, and even after reading and hovering over the rules, it’s not obvious that the right side of the board are the rules we have to satisfy. Once we understand these fundamental game mechanics, the game becomes understandable and fun. I would suggest making the first levels tutorial levels, where the player is given only one piece to move, and teach the player how the game works.
\nThe icons on the right side are not intuitive, and writing out the rules could help make it easier to understand. I know we can hover over the “rules” to read them, but if I have to hover over the rules to read them all the time, they could be written explicitly instead. The layout becomes crucial to better understand what to do. After level 3, it became difficult to understand how to satisfy the rules, because there just too many icons.
\nThat being said. After completely understanding this, the game became a lot more fun, as I had to think about how to solve the puzzle. If the beginning of the game had more emphesis on how to play it, I think the game could become a better experience.

I have a feeling the gameplay mechanics are much smarter and more interesting than what I managed to grasp, but overall, it was engaging to try and understand them. The goal is to make the left side match the right side-it sounds easy, but it’s actually quite challenging and rewarding at the same time. Along the way, you end up learning how to play chess!\nI was able to reach 0–5, and it was fun to play. I might come back later to play again.
\nBy the way, I love how you can reveal all the final matches by turning the cat green-it’s a really useful hint system!
\nJust a quick question: Was Mor-Chess 2 originally part of Mor-Chess and later split into two separate parts due to size limitations?
No, I just have similar ideas about abstracting chess into a system without playing on an actual board. These 2 games stem from my same goal but other than that they are not related.

\nUPDATE: I was told the above reply wasn’t polite and that the rules are told in-game. Let me try again:
\nThe text on this page reads “A chess puzzle game about building chess positions by following a few simple rules.”
\nThis makes me think that it is chess game. I know chess. The game starts with an 8 by 8 board which is the same as in chess. The pieces do not look like chess pieces though. If I squint I can guess what’s what. You could easily double the resolution to get more detail in. Perhaps even a text below the pieces to tell what each piece is.
\nThe text reads “drag pieces onto the board, but there are some rules above. hover over them for details”. I hover them and get four texts:
\nOk, which one is the king? I’m going to try the piece far right since that is pictured in the rules. I now get a “the rule is satisfied”. What now? Hmm, ok, maybe I have to do the same for the “opponent”. Let’s try. Ah, yes, that was it. Next level.
\nThis was far from obvious coming into the game the first time. A rule of thumb in game design is that the game should be easy to understand at a glance (but perhaps have hidden complexity), or the rules should be gradually explained, perhaps by showing a successful solution and one that fails one or more rules. Right now if I start dragging pieces left and right I have no idea what’s wrong. Perhaps prevent the player from dragging the wrong pieces onto the board in the first few levels? Like an interactive tutorial.
\nAlso, if you look at the other feedback there are several other’s echoing my initial post that it was hard to understand what to do in the game. Sorry if my initial feedback came across as blunt.
