Mewnbeam’s Adventure

\n

Build your deck, battle enemies, and defeat the Rat King in this magical roguelike deckbuilder.

\n

If you’re a frequent roguelike-deckbuilder player, the game is designed so that you can learn as you go. If you don’t know what a card does, try it out! If you prefer a little more foresight, some notable information is below.

\n

How to Play

\n

At the start of every turn you reset to 2 Actions (pink diamond) and gain 1 Mana (blue circle). Mana is carried over between turns, but Actions are not.

\n

Actions and Mana are used to play cards. Each card lists its cost in the top left.

\n
    \n
  1. Click or drag a card to play it
  2. \n
  3. Repeat step 1
  4. \n
  5. Click ‘End Turn’ when you’re done playing cards
  6. \n
  7. Good luck!
  8. \n
\n\n

Cards will unlock in your Library the first time you add them to your deck. (Generating a card during a battle will not unlock it.)

Really great game! Brings back memories of Slay the Spire which I’m sure was a big inspiration.. Also love to see that I’m not the only one making games in DOM :D

Great deep game, I had a blast figuring out all the mechanics and beating that evil rat king :)

\n

If you have the time it would be wonderful if you could make a director’s cut with sound effect :)

The graphics really engage you into the game play. Even the background is moving to create the sense of progress. Too bad I died on weasel. One suggestion would have been, to cut down on the range of cards and library to really enhance the audio because it would’ve completed the experience.

Very nice game, i like how smooth game feels, good animations, only missing music and sound, but overall great job.

Very fun card game! Love the graphics and general gameplay. I wish there was a bit less randomness. Or perhaps some way to build your starter deck. Great work.

Clearly there’s a lot of work here. Good graphics. The UI is not super intuitive though. Too bad there was no room left for audio.

It’s so addictive, I loved it! Really nice graphics.
I wish there was sound/music. You’ve used the entire DOM for the game—kudos for that. I wonder if you had used Canvas, you could have saved a lot of bytes?.
\nEnjoyed playing!

I don’t play many deck builder games but I enjoyed this a lot. I loved the art style too, the “tongue bath” really made me laugh when I saw it! I can see you are at the 13KB limit, it’s just crying out for some audio even like short card noises as cards appear at the start of the level.

I’m a big fan of deck builders so this hit the spot for me. Audio would be nice. Inspired by slay the spire I would guess? Great job

What a nice card battle game

\n

The graphics are great, and I love the card animations

\n

The progression is good, and the large variety of cards makes for a fun experience

\n

A couple of times I wasn’t sure how many cards I could use per turn especially as they seemed to be highlighting and “waving” at me

Are you kidding me? A Slay the Spire like game with a cat killing rats?

\n

This is simply amazing, really addictive gameplay and overall polished and well balanced.

\n

One of my favourite games in the competition.

Thanks for your submission! It’s great that you have finished and delivered a complete game. You made an impressive usage of all the bytes you have available. There’s a lot of deliberated choices in every corner and the closer you pay attention to, the greater it is.

\n

Starting technically, with the choice to go HTML and defer all the rendering to the browser. And then you have a bunch of even greater choices with things like using a single spritesheet combined with CSS, or the React-style code you approached implementing everything.

\n

Then, you didn’t stop there but made sure that a lot of interactions are really nice, the UI responsive for all the movements of the mouse, and making everything move smoothly when there are actions. The cherry on the top is that you cared even about highlighting some text on the witch dialog.

\n

And then you applied it all to make a game that completely derailed my voting schedule.

\n

You put together an impressive set of cards and enemies that make for a very compelling game. The encounters and then random events in between are really interesting and I’m at every step thinking and making interesting choices.

\n

The game also offer a lot of variety. I already defeated the Rat King with a varied amounts of decks like cantripping (?), stun, aggro, drawing one. And they all play differently!

\n

I really enjoyed building the drawing one because it was the type of game breaking one that is really fun to see play out. A bunch of Meow cards with the Spellbook, discard as many cards and you get a combo. And that it worked! The engine you wrote is really robust.

\n

You put a lot of effort on making it simple to play and I tried for a long time not to read the instructions. I didn’t manage to figure out what the “Exhaust” meant and I didn’t pick up on the enemies abilities. For very long time I thought the shield hitpoints were the Exhaust hitpoints that the Swipe was attacking because it “Attack 1 to all Exhaust”. I was even skipping using it as I saw no point :P

\n

And all in only 13kb…

Very interesting roguelike deckbuilder! Enjoyed playing it, however, was missing some music to make it a bit more immersive.

\n

Also, if you’ll have time, it would be nice to add distinct visuals for the status effects (bleed or stun) — as far as I understand, those are displayed as a minus sign right now.

\n

Good job!
