According to historical and mythological records, during the 13th century in America, the fall of Chichén Itzá - the last of the great Maya cities - took place. In the center of Chichén Itzá stood the main temple of Kukulcan, the feathered serpent. Centuries of glory turned the spiritual incarnation of Kukulcan residing in the temple into a powerful serpent, but as the city was abandoned, the lack of faithful followers quickly caused it to lose its power. With an irreversible destiny and no more followers, Kukulkan wants to escape before disappearing, but to achieve this, it must confront images of the new gods and artifacts of the upcoming civilizations.
\nKukulkan can move using WASD or the arrow keys. To shoot, you can use the “I” or “Z” key.
\nThe order of the bosses is random, and depending on the time of day, the boss’s difficulty varies, being easier during the day and more challenging at night. Try all permutations of bosses and times of the day so everybody knows you’ve won the game!
\nMany (MANY!) things happened this month, so it’s incredible that I was able to upload this in the state it’s in. Some things that were left out include an upgrade system, two more bosses, better patterns, music, and improved graphics.

The “standard” for this type of game is hold to fire, but while firing you move a bit more slowly, so the player has to balance holding fire + less mobility, with not shooting but being able to dodge better.
\nI think having that plus some of the other thing planned would have made this amazing. As it stands, it has a great presentation and great visuals. If you develop it further after the competition I’d definitely play a more polished version a lot more!

I wanted to do auto fire on hold but for that I needed a lot more of bullets on screen to feel good. I was going to do that after adding 2d billboards as I can’t have hundreds of 3d objects on screen (The sdfs are prerendered but marching them in real time is still slow, and I wanted it to run well on my low end integrated GPU). But, life got in the way and I had to abandon it in the state it was. I had two more bosses planned and the idea was to be able to choose your own path and choose upgrades after each boss. I even got left almost 2KiB to work with! Thanks a lot for your feed back and for playing it! I wanted to play yours but my poor gpu is not enough and I didn’t want to vote without being able to properly test it. Will try to get access to a better computer!

\nNo negative remarks for this one!

I didn’t want to use a generic one from the browser so I went with this option as I was able to do it with very few bytes using a couple of sticks. Showing the inputs in game is always a problem for me, I don’t know where to put them while looking good. Also I wanted to have more than one way of controlling them for right-handed / left-handed usage so that made things more difficult in terms of screen real-state. Will have to be more creative next year with this! Thanks for playing and leaving feedback!

The bosses are not super tuned and leaning towards difficult. Depending the time of the day is the difficulty of the boss so I wanted to tweak them to be pretty easy at the beginning of the day and pretty difficult at the end for more replayability. I didn’t have the time so they are not as fined tuned as I would like. Upgrades were also on the roadmap (There is even a lot of code for them inside) but didn’t had the time to finish it. Thanks for the feedback!

\nI like game’s visual style and serpent’s animation (animated text is also a nice touch).
\nDifferent bosses gives a nice variety of gameplay.

\nSuper impressive!\nI wasn’t expecting to see some 3D so really well done.\nThat feeling of playing a mix of strategy & action, like mini-games, really enjoyable.
\nI do miss a bit of music to tag along, that would have made a big difference :)
\nGreat that you thought about playing with wasd or arrow keys, it’s really important for those who don’t have a qwerty :)\nLast feedback, I did find the font a bit hard to read, a bit too much maybe!
\nGreat job overall!

Also the sound effects could be more elaborate. Maybe you could try mutating the sound effects slightly each time they are played?
\nSmall remark: The fractal landscape and the clouds are very cool but for some reason the clouds are not visible in an rectangular area around the player. I suppose this is intentional to visualize the game area.

Someone else chose an American theme!\nI was unable to beat of the enemies, as there was no way to avoid being hit by them from what I could tell, even moving forward and what not did not seem to work. It looked awesome though, and I loved the sound effects.

\nInteresting bosses, each of which has at least 3 levels of difficulty, I think I saw three of them in total, I managed to defeat two, but the third… Also, each of the bosses is unique, which requires a strategy according to each one. Attention and creativity are your true assistants in dealing with them.
\nPerhaps if the events did not take place only in the mountains over which you fly, and also had certain Mayan artifacts, such as statues, etc., then it would add to the theme.
\nIt was fun! Thanks for playing and congratulations!

I found them quite challenging but was able to defeat a couple, and I think the challenge added to the replayability of the game.

Thanks for your submission to js13k!\nI’m sure you’ve worked hard on your game, but I’m not aware of how much time you spent on it, so excuse me if things I mention were in your mind, but got left out in the rush of the month or just because you hit the 13kb limit :)
