You’re alone in a graveyard, hounded by armies of the undead. Can you escape death and rescue all of humanity?

\n

Set to 8-bit music, Gravepassing evokes Game Boy aesthetics with a 16x16 base tile grid, downscaled emojis, and dithered lighting for that overall retro vibe.

\n

You can play the game with a keyboard or controller.

\n

CONTROLS

\n

Keyboard:\nMove = [Arrow Keys]\nFire = [Space]\nDrop bomb = [X]\nMenu = [ESC]

\n

Controller:\nMove = left joystick\nFire = (A)\nDrop bomb = (B)\nMenu = (Options) / (Menu)

\n

The game should work on any operating system in Chrome / Firefox but it was primarily designed for macOS emojis and looks the best there. It adapts to other platforms too, you can say those are platform-exclusive versions ;)

\n

Written in TypeScript.

Fun little zombie combat and exploration game. I found that I could generally walk past enemies and dodge their… zombie bullets?… and that was the fastest way to get around. Fighting enemies was sometimes useful to regain health, but running seems like the way to play!

Fighting is tough, I mostly ran to avoid fights.

Nice graphics and sounds.

Well done!

Felt like I was playing a tapestry with the stylised pixels look, a nice touch.

\n

The music was good.

\n

I played it on a DS4 gamepad and it worked well. Fire was Circle, Bomb was Triangle.

\n

I wasn’t sure which zombies had which power ups or if they were randomly assigned?

\n

I’d have liked to be able to remotely detonate the bombs, as the zombies were often moving, the bombs would go off in an open space.

Great use of emojis with the effect you’ve got going on. It’s difficult to tell that you are in fact using emoji. I also love that the music changes for each level. The end disappointed me a little bit. I was looking forward to a boss fight, or maybe an end theme, but I was left for dead in the underworld. It aligns with the theme though.

\n

I also like the directional arrows, otherwise I would have been lost.

\n

I’d love to have some more effects to the bombs. I had no idea about how large the area of affect was.

\n

Fun and creepy game.

This game looks amazing. The dithering effect on the shadows is really good. The zombies are easy enough to kill to not be a bit deterrent but in enough numbers they can easily swarm you.\nThe UI often occluded game elements, even enemies, which was annoying/dangerous. I followed the arrows and ended up in a level full of computer monitors but I don’t understand how. It happened so fast.\nI really dig the level up system, and I like that you still progress even when you die.

Awesome full-featured gameplay, aesthetics and functionality for such lean code

It is really quite faithful to Game Boy. Music, graphics, and even the feel of the game.

\n

It was a bit too hard for me, luckily there was an easy mode.\nPersonally, I’d prefer if they shot slower, and the game was made gradually harder by other means - like the number of monsters, maybe some labyrinth, maybe more zoomed out.\nBut then it would be less in style so maybe it should be left as-is.

\n

I got to the factory. A different setting, different music. Unfortunately, I lost my focus and died there. So I don’t know if later is more of the same, or some different mechanics.

\n

All in all, very nice experience. Congratulations!

The chiptune music is awesome. Love this! Really feeling the GameBoy vibe and I think it plays nicely into the nostalgia a lot of gamers have. Making the game available on controller is great.\nI love the 8-bit graphics, but making the bomb and fire very different from the background would be ideal; it’s a little hard to see what the character is doing at times as the colours all blend together. Subtle variations in the background are great for making a gaming environment! Would love to see a scrolling platform for your next iteration.\nHaving the WASD keys available for movement would also be great. I’m a controller person so playing this on controller feels more natural.\nbeing a little clearer on how the controls work would be great. For example, shots aren’t fired in the direction the character is looking. It’s actually shooting in the last direction that the arrow key was pointed. This is slightly confusing and takes a bit to get used to.\nGreat concept though and love it!

I am not a 100% sure of what happened in this game. I think I just saved the world, but… ha ha.\nWhat I liked:
