This game LOOKS amazing, it sounds awesome, but I just can’t get past the goblins no matter what I do. Blocking only gets me so far, and they just freaking keep coming, getting me stuck in the water, or other things. I never got past Stage 4 after a dozen play throughs, and I feel like there’s got to be something I’m missing, because this is an otherwise awesome game. Maybe I’m just too slow.

The goblins are there to make breaking items a pain, if you have your sword (1) or hands (4) equiped then hold shift and the shield blocks all the spears.

\n

The key tactic is keep moving while you break the trees and rocks, dont let skelly’s touch you and keep the sheild out.

I love the look and the sound, reminds me of the good old Amiga-days.\nGamplay is nice too, the switching of weapon/tools by the number-keys is a bit awkward. At least when playing with the mouse (would be better using the mousewheel, as the icons did not work for me.)

\n

One time, i think i clicked outside of thze game-area, the knight just began running to the left, and did not stop again… hm,

\n

Nevertheless a really good game, thx for writing it!

I like the fighting mechanics, the graphics and the music are good, and the in game tutorial helps getting used with the game.

\n

The levels felt a bit repetitive though. In the first attempt of finishing the game I didn’t get very far. Then in the second attempt I realized that it was probably a better idea to keep killing enemies to improve my skill instead of directly clearing the resources. Then I realized that if block constantly the goblins’ spears can never hit me, so it became a bit too easy. I’d go to the next level, clear the stones, clear the trees, then switch to the sword, keep block constantly, kill the skeletons, and then the goblins are easy prey.

With more time and bytes Id like to have added a cool down or some sort of mana for the shield so it was not over powered. You kind of found the best tactic, i agree if I had cut back a little in some areas I could have added more gameplay and variation.

Loved the look of this, really dig the iso perspective. Together with the audio, this gave me 80s Amiga vibes.

\n

The design was engaging, I like the dilemma between wanting to clear the resources and keeping the enemies down. The actual combat felt mushy though, I was never sure if I’d hit someone, and after a while something appeared to go out of sync with the animations and my guy stopped really swinging his sword at all, even though I appeared to be damaging enemies.

\n

Great stuff in here though, with some more polish to tighten it up, this would be a top contender.

Thank you for such detailed feedback, I had to stop dev 3 days before the end and should have planned for this and asked for some play testing; some of these issues I was aware of and had to accept others I just overlooked!

\n

Some replies to your comnents:\nTutorials were quickly added and I accept your point 100%, it is not all clear, when I realised time was short I should have scaled back and simplified things.

\n

A known issue with the knockback but I had to accept it.

Attack directions: the whole combat needs some thought, it works but could be so much better!

such amazing graphics! love how it starts a new level by tweening the tiles. I wish you could click on weapon icons to switch, to avoid having to press 1,2,3. Awesome game, the difficulty ramped really fast with two skeletons in one stage and 2 skeletons and 4 archers at once in the next - only one archer needs to be introduced at first - maybe I was quick in the previous stages so archers did not had time to spawn? When they were hiding in the castle it was almost impossible for me to kill them. I didn’t like the bullet-arrows that much. If the arrows had a range there would have been some safe ground in the rear. I think the castle itself should be an obstacle that you cannot walk through and if the archers could mount in to shoot from the towers, then leave to chase when you’re away it could provide some more strategy.. I know that’s too much for a 13kb game but is something to consider - in my opinion the axe and the hammer are unnecessary and the resource could be just treasure chests.

I enjoyed the pixel graphics, and the music, the different enemy types were good to add variety. The way the levels drew was pretty neat, and the waves worked well, I thought the isometric worked well, and I know how hard it is to get right so you did a good job on that.

\n

I liked the concept of having little “islands” which you need to complete before moving on to the next one.

The water on the land slowed down your travel a lot which made it hard during battles sometimes as it didn’t seem to affect the enemy’s movements. Also I was able to walk off the map into darkness…

Hi Ryan,

\n

Great work on this submission! I truly enjoyed the interface and interaction, here’s my comments and feedback:

\n
    \n
  1. The music and sound effects were SPOT ON - good work on this! I really felt engaged and I even danced a little in my chair 🙂
  2. \n
  3. The movement was great as well, and I enjoyed the feel and interaction when chopping trees and other interactions
  4. \n
  5. In terms of UI, the selection is missing the hotkeys for 1,2, 3,4 etc to let the user know. I guessed it though
  6. \n
  7. Really good work on the water fluctuation - bravo there
  8. \n
  9. I would have liked to see the full source files and a more in depth README and license file to know how to run it. This would also allow me to check for best practices such as eslint, prettier, etc.
  10. \n
  11. I wasn’t sure what the point of hitting the tombstones / skeletal remains was, so might want to make that more clear or even make it a bonus?
  12. \n
  13. It appears like there’s a different font at the bottom and top hud - if it’s not, it might be a UI bug because it appears differently for me
  14. \n
  15. Also - bonus points for how responsive you are to everyone’s comments!
  16. \n
\n

Overall it was a great submission, and I look forward to seeing what you do with it next. Hit me up on twitter @jedihacks for any discussion!
