\n\nIn 1278, Brother Doen is asked to leave the temple during a Feast Night on a mission that might cost him more than his life — his very own soul.
\n
Feast Night is a small first person “narrative” game with a couple twists and multiple endings.
\nThis game wouldn’t be possible without the help of many — ZzFX, lightgl.js, Roadroller, fellow js13k devs, friends & my family <3

I love the title card drop. Answering by nodding or shaking with the mouse is also a nice mechanic.
\nThe fighting is a bit hard. I tried multiple times and most of them was insta-killed by a demon coming from behind … except for the last attempt when I got to 41 kills somehow.

But it is true the game is extremely difficult (and kinda unfair). “Demons” spawn all around you (specially if you get too far from them). This is done on purpose so it’s really hard getting the craziest ending, but indeed might be too much :)

\nIt’s a bit short, but i like the multiple possible endings.

\nIt was only after everything was in place that I realized how short the main loop was and I decided to add the “metagame” component with the “play, die, play again” mechanic which fits surprisingly well. Text occupies lots of space so it was a compromise between having enough conversations / options and everything else (I originally wanted to be able to enter inside buildings and navigate room by room, but ended the way it is).
\nI will make a small “extended edition” with a bit more of everything, specially at the end - I want to make the “game over screens” walkable spaces (SPOILER ALERT: in heaven or hell - and you won’t just get a message and repeat the whole thing, but be able to have mini conversations there as well with them).
\nOh and I’m super happy you liked the multiple endings! I love games that give you options and make you wonder “could I do this?”. I wish I could add more of those.

Seems that cool lore is just baked right in. You don’t know exactly what’s going on, but you know enough to know it isn’t good. I love it.
\nI think the weakness of the game is that it’s just a little hard to know what to do. It isn’t clear how you save someone or when they’ve been saved. I think this plus like one more mechanic for saving people, like where you have to talk to one person to solve a problem for another, or fetch an item. Something simple but that gives you more task variety, and then ya it’s golden.
\nStill, a huge fan of the games style, lore, and world. Very good game!

\nAt some point I wanted to add a counter for “saved souls” (similar to the counter when “purifying demons” during the second half of the game), or perhaps particle effects (when someone is saved you can see… a white cross fading over their heads or something like that). I ran out of time and bytes to do so, so instead I play a subtle sound when someone is “Saved”. This clearly isn’t nowhere near enough to convey this information.
\nI will add this to the “extended version” as well as the fix for the “stuck reloading” bug. But in any case - thanks a lot for your feedback! :)

\nThe game changed a lot during its development but when I found the type of atmosphere I wanted, I went for it.
\nI will probably work on a small “extended edition” after the compo is finished - there are a few things that didn’t make it into the game and I think will make it even more atmospheric :)

\nAfter losing, I couldn’t figure out how to get back into the game (stuck on the “number of souls purified” screen) and had to reload. Just want to get back to blastin’ faster

\nI only caught this when the game was already online with no more time for fixes - local builds had no issue. I will submit a fix when the voting is over - the game is meant to work as you describe it, running loops as fast as you can.
\nI’m super glad you liked the game’s style, thank you! :)

\nThe transition to the fight was so cool and atmospheric! It was hard for me to fight tho, but probably it’s my skill issue.
\nAfter this one, I decided to go 3D next year. Thanks for the expiriance.

\nIndeed, the “death by a demon spawning behind your neck” is a big no-no, but it gave me (and others) so many stupid jump scares that it had to stay :D\nIt fit well with the game, but also made more compelling getting to the craziest ending possible. I think I managed once to get 108 demons “purified” but it was madness (if I remember right you need to get 70 kills or so to reach the “definitive ending”. Not that it’s the “good” one though ;) ).

While confusing, the level is just one long “corridor of trees” with invisible barriers / colliders on the sides.\nWalking backwards has “noclip” on purpose to avoid all collisions, it’s a small trick you can use in a few special cases ;)\n(The invisible barriers on the sides block you walking backwards though).
