Outstanding, reminded me of playing Jaguar XJ220 and Outrun on the Amiga. So much to take in from this game, the car is cool, great movement and even jumps! Managed to catch some air on one of the steeper hills.

Love how the scenery changes between stages, all of which are great. The rocks caught me out a few times, so did the grass on the road which was a nice touch.

Only thing missing was some dust off the tyres ;D

Great game! Love Outrun, love this. To me, the biggest omission is controller support. This is the type of game that really would be much better with a controller. That and a drift mechanic like the newer Outrun games and this is a 10/10 for me.

Thanks so much. I did have trouble coming up with a compelling game idea that used the theme. I thought of a few ways to use it in this game but they all seemed so gimmicky. So I included 13 a few times in the game, in the title, on the car and license plate. I think for js13k the theme is less of the point of the contest as it is for other game jams, with the size restriction being the main thing. I also didn’t manage to fit music. So next year my goal is theme and music.

Graphics is good (though horison is bland - arcade games usually have some cool city or something there). One small issue– once I entered “Free Ride Mode,” I couldn’t seem to exit it (i.e., the HUD stayed turned off forever). Maybe a bug? Or maybe intentional, since once you’re a Free Rider, I guess you can never really go back to your old lifestyle

The only thing I’ve noticed is that for some reason sometimes when I don’t release the forward button, I still lose speed as if I had released it.

For improvements, I would like to not appear behind another car when driving into it, but push to the side, because if a truck hit me, I ended up behind it :).

Despite the aesthetics, this is more of a driving experience than a race game. It’s unbelievable how much diversity you managed to pack in terms of biomes, plants, street signs, billboards. Just wow.

Also, I’m shocked how smooth it runs on my basic computer, even on Firefox. There are other games this year that melted my browser with just a few CSS effects.

There are a few things that would make it even faster but I couldn’t fit them (like using static meshes for vehicles). Next year it is my mission to have background music in my js13k game!

Fantastic 3D graphics, beautiful looking varied landscapes in great colours.

Very good controls / physics. Love that you cannot stear the car while it is in the air and that it is hard to accelerate up a hill.

Reminds me a lot of the old “Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge” from the Amiga :)

Thank you, so many people have mentioned Lotus that I had to go back and check it out, I was mostly inspired by Sega’s OutRun. Looks like a very cool game, I have faint memories of playing something similar in DOS.

Great improvement ideas! I want to rework the physics model to include skidding and drifting, I had to really simplify to make it fit for js13k. Also the section hud distance marker is another thing I had to cut but will bring back in enhanced edition.

The traffic system is something I want to play with much more to not only eliminate jams but also include things like rival racers, varying speeds, lane changing, accidents on the side of the road, cross traffic. all kinds of cool stuff to play with!

I think accelerate is kind of necessary, even though it may seem like you are holding that most of the time, it just feels right for a driving game. Also you need to let off the gas to navigate around traffic. When I include other features like drifting, turbos, etc I think it will feel even better.

Such a great game & entry! One of my favourites this gamejam, I am really liking what you did with the 3D here. And there are so many levels to drive through, youve packed so much into this entry. Its fun seeing all the signs in-game as well, this game truly feels like the retro driving game of js13k.

Thanks! Yes, the road is all proc gen with a fixed seed. So it can generate random tracks but for this jam I wanted to focus on just one fixed seed to let me dial it in. There are a few params for this to control the min/max turn, how often it turns, and similar params for the hills which use a 1D noise algo.

The gameplay balance at least time pressure wise is on the easy side now because I want people to be able to beat it on their 2nd or 3rd playthrough even at low skill levels. I will tweak all that as I build it out into a larger game for wider release.

Love the billboards. Overall pretty fun, can’t say I get the Theme tie-in but otherwise well done. For whatever reason my FPS dropped substantially in the tunnels, but otherwise it ran great.

What can I say?! Amazingly well done, as always! I followed the progress on X and really looked forward to playing the game. And Dr1v3n Wild really delivers. It is a great racing game building upon the heritage of games such as Out Run.

If I was to complain on anything it would be the engine sound that doesn’t have enough oumph! BUT in my mind I remembered racing games on the C64, such as Out Run and Super Cycle having a fairly low register “rumbling” engine sound (if you can say that about any sound from the SID chip), but when looking at longplays of the games on YouTube there wasn’t really any engine sound in Out Run (but pretty decent music) and the engine sound in Super Cycle was absolutely terrible. Pitstop 2 did a better job. So I take back my complaint about the engine sound in Dr1v3n Wild. It’s good enough!

I got to stage 5, 3:30:0. The game is really impressive, it’s 3D, which is a feat in itself, but it’s also a good 3D game with lots of content. It’s truly amazing what you’ve added in 13kB. I like how the commercial banners are placed along the track, and they look crisp too. (Is this the start of LittleJS3D?)

I tried both the mouse and the arrow controls. The arrows are easier to use than the mouse, but I imagine the mouse controls could easily translate into touch controls for a mobile version. The controls are tight, and I feel in control of the car. When the camera changes due to the turns, the controls can feel somewhat unpredictable, but it wasn’t a major issue.

The stages are varied enough to make it interesting for the player to keep going. Adjusting the environment, the lanes (from 3 to 2), additional grass on the road and so on. Maybe there’s more after Stage 5.
