Hard to understand how many hits some of the enemies take.\nI would’ve liked to have some control over when to fire the cannon ball too.

\n

Overall it’s quite enjoyable, it reminds me of those old vertical scrolling shoot’em ups but with a ship! :D

\n

The ship not being able to stand still adds an extra bit of difficulty, which is nice.

The gameplay, sounds and graphics are good, all runs well. Missing some gameplay / features.

\n

These types of games work well with some progression rather than endless play but this is a good start for a vertically scrolling shooter.

I appreciate the Hi-score emphasis and the music fits really well. Didn’t like the single instance of the sound effect though. Others have stated the problem with the lack of feedback when hitting enemies. The other issue for me was that the powerups were too similar, yet the bullet hell one should definitely stand out, because the enemies were getting ridiculously hard with that type of chasing. Also firing the cannon with Space would’ve helped a lot. Overall good shoot’em up!

Thanks for your review. Really, i should had create a hit feedback for stronger enemies. I will consider it on future projects.

The game has a great opening screen, and the idea of a boat for a shooter is great. Also, the sound effects were great.

\n

The only big issue is that the enemy sprites didn’t really feel nautical, so they need to be improved. Also, no special bosses after so many points would add variety. The powerups come at two at a time, making the bullet one weird as I collect both and have the timer reset.

\n

The best thing is that there is a high score list and a reset function. Makes me feel I’m back in the arcades.

About the enemies, i have thought to create some squids but my poor drawing skills in a low resolution screen doesnt works well, hahaha.

I am happy about your comment about retro feeling. It was my main goal on the project. :D

I liked the opening letter and its content - it sets a good context. However, it is too far removed from the topic of the competition, although I think the game is good, my record is 504 :).

\n

When I chose to play without sound, I couldn’t start the game, the buttons didn’t seem to work to close the start screen… Also, I’m more used to controlling WASD, and someone is used to arrows, it would be good to always offer both options as for me.

\n

I noticed fish in the ocean - I was happy :). The last type of the enemy’s troops had already clung to me too much, and what he liked about me… Maybe it would be a good idea to add some kind of heavy cannon blast with half the map radius that would have a lot of cooldown time but give you a chance to catch your breath

\n

Thanks and congratulations!

Thanks for your review. It is very important. About the game story, i confess, it was not a medieval story after all.

\n

The WASD is a great idea, it would be a good addition for the project. The cannon blast could be great too! i have imaginated it exploding half of the enemies on the screen! :D

\n

Its very nice that you noticed the fish, i have drawed it to kill some time and it have became nice. :D

A great shooter game! I really enjoyed the sound effects and the smooth movements of the ship. What was interesting from this is that it was not like any shooter game, where the main player scrolls from left to right. The main player was able to move all around the game board, which I thought was a good implementation due to the main player being a ship. It would be great to see some obstacles thrown into the game play as well as enemies. Something like land that the ship cannot go over - for example.

I really like when games try to be faithful to the NES aesthetics: the splashscreen, the intro music, the simple but slowly progressing gameplay and the sound effects, and the solid pixel art. It’s unfortunately missing music during gameplay! I would also top it off with a pixel font. The controls were really smooth and the progression felt adequate.

\n

It wasn’t clear to me when the cannon was shooting. Was it always automatic? Maybe there should be a button to use it. The monsters that follow me were very hard to kill, but maybe that’s just me,

I like the NES asthetics too. Games like Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon have tried to revive this and it is pretty good.

\n

About the cannon, it is automatic. My son gave me this button recomendation too when he was testing.

Nice! Now I’m thinking about why we don’t see more straight up scrolling shooters. Maybe we’ve forgotten this genre exists!

\n

Great work on getting some pleasant graphics in, by and large the game worked as I imagine you intended. The sounds were basic, but they did their job. Solid effort.

\n

Next time, I’d think about the screen composition a little more: your screen is pretty empty, so the game feels empty, even though you have lots of things flying around! You also want to be more deliberate about your enemy spawning. The random you have now is fine to test and get started, but the real story telling artistry of great shooters comes from their spawn and bullet patterns. If you’re into the genre, you’ll want to focus on leveling up that next!

The enemy spawning patterns like rounding and queue would be really a good fit for the game.
