The 12th Century was a time of happiness for witches of the world..

…until, an evil demon turned The Five Great Witches into cats and imprisoned them in cursed towers.

Can you, a lowly apprentice, rescue them?

How to play

\n

Rescue the cat at the top of the tower and escape back through the entrance.

Notes

\n

For mobile, works best on iOS and Firefox Android, too.\nI realised at the last moment that mobile Chrome had performance issues drawing circles to the canvas and had to tweak the mobile Chrome version. It is playable, though.

\n

Hope you have as much fun playing as I did hacking this together. Enjoy!

This is a very nice game! Simple controls, just left and right arrow keys, but in combination with the level and enemy designs, it provides an ample amount of gameplay depth, requiring quite a bit of strategy to overcome the well-designed challenges.

\n

Update: There seems to be an issue with mobile controls. The game does suggest that it fully supports playing on a mobile device, but on an iPhone the left and right taps were often not registered, resulting in an unsatisfying death. This game would be perfect to play on the phone if this is fixed!

Really enjoyed playing through the levels on this game.

\n

The graphics are cute and work well.

\n

The sound effects are good and the enemies challenging.

\n

My son enjoyed playing this game too, trying to get to the top and back as efficiently as possible.

The game looks and sounds FANTASTIC! The animations are nice and look like a high budget game made by a studio! 😃. This Is the feedback: The pacing did not feel right. I kept getting stuck on level one and felt like this could be a level later on in the game (maybe 3/4). Pacing aside nice game with beautifull graphics!

Great concept, and quite fun to play! On Chrome it hitches a lot, skipping many frames at a time and making it hard to play, but it was smooth in Firefox at least. The hair trail effect was a nice touch! It’s maybe a bit punishing to have to restart the game after a few mistakes, and the hit boxes seemed a little big, but otherwise it’s really snappy, fun to control, and obvious what to do. Awesome work.

G’day!

\n

Oh, it was not easy, from the 20th time, not earlier…

\n

Although the theme is somewhat generic, the gameplay is top notch! The complexity of the levels is very well chosen, so much so that it kept me in the “flow”. I also liked the graphics, especially how the young witcher blinking :D.

\n

Restarting after death from the same level where you died is very lacking… It happens that you don’t understand new dangers the first time, and going through the previous ones all the time is tiring… I also noticed that although it is expected to press certain keys to start the game - any key starts the start. I also lacked control for the A-D (WASD).

\n

It was fun to play, thanks!

Great game! The graphics are 🔥, and it had a lot of little touches, like the lightning on the title screen, the different hair color of the witches, the fireworks at the end. It has a really coherent art style, really polished in that sense. I also experienced the frame drops, but that might be due to my junk PC. My one feedback would be to replace the life system with a death counter. In the context of js13k your game has enough content to be satisfying without padding from the 3 life system. The enemy variety is crazy and the whole game kept me engaged. Really solid entry, well done.

Game play is very good and lots of fun, did not expect to enjoy this so much! Well made game, such simply controls but very challenging challenging.

Loved the cat and the quick escape needed once you saved them.

Very smooth controls and impressive graphics, but restarting from the beginning is no fun. Still one of my favourite games in the jam. Good job!

This is awesome! The controls feel really good for being so simple. Animations (falling hair, munching skulls) look really nice, too. I also love the level flow– go up to save the cat, go down to escape the dragon.

\n

Only thing on my wishlist is some sort of checkpoint system– either within a single level, or allowing players to choose which level to start from.

\n

PS: This reminds me a bit of “Icy Tower.” I wonder if you’ve played that before.

Adorable sprites, and a fun idea! Nice procedural hair too :)

\n

Unfortunately this was one of those games where I made it to lv 4 on my first try I think, then for the life of me couldn’t make it out of lv 1 again after that. I just suck at reflex things!

\n

For me, I don’t think the 3 lives thing was necessary, I would have just let folks try over and over again to beat the current level to that they could see everything you’ve made within the span of a gamejam play session!

Hi Eoin,

\n

Great work on this submission - you truly did a remarkable job! I’ll post my feedback below from my review:

\n
    \n
  1. Equally as fun responsively on mobile and web, and as a mobile app expert I have a lot of appreciation for this. Bravo mi amigo!
  2. \n
  3. I enjoyed the mechanic of flying up only with a certain stamina - I’d suggest adding that in the instructions but it was easy enough to figure out
  4. \n
  5. I found that while falling it was easy to find ‘gaps’ in the enemies; so perhaps having a mechanic to drag them towards the player who’s trying to escape could be a nice bonus. The dragon creature though does a good job of adding urgency, so bravo here!
  6. \n
  7. One additional UI/UX suggestion would be to add a 1-2 second pause after the player picks up the cat. This way, you can add bit more cinematic flare before they start falling. You could also potentially have changes to the platforms themselves upon receiving the cat, but these are simply enhancement suggestions.
  8. \n
  9. For your source code, you might want to consider removing the zip file and adding it to git-ignore to make your package more clean. Additionally, converting to typescript for OOP and adding eslint and stylelint are always good ways to ensure consistency from community contributions.
  10. \n
\n

Seriously, great work on this - one of my favorites! What’s next? Feel free to hit me up on Twitter/X @jedihacks to have a discussion!

Hello! Thanks for your submission to js13k!\nI’m sure you’ve worked hard on your game, but I’m not aware of how much time you spent on it, so excuse me if things I mention were in your mind, but got left out in the rush of the month or just because you hit the 13kb limit :)
