I found about the game jam halfway into the actual game jam like a half of the time had already elapsed. Then I procrastinate for a couple more days. And finally on the last day. I started to make the game. This is the first time I’ve ever made a game and I’ve ever used JavaScript.

\n

I just thought the idea of the actual puzzle. Being a QR code. That works was really cool

\n

So I tried to make that\nI’m a total beginner

\n

I don’t really understand how to get the QR code to work, but the game works….. i hope

Thank you soo much xem, I was originally going to make the player a human and when you dashed it turned into a cat… (something of that sort), it was supposed to have multiple levels as well.. ran out of time tho lol.

Interesting idea, but next time you could try to spend more than one day on it. That said, for a work of a single day as a total beginner, it is an encouraging result.

\n

Concerning the game mechanisms, in the current state, the dash adds nothing to the experience and could have been omitted in my opinion.

\n

“I don’t really understand how to get the QR code to work”. The QR code format has a lot of rules, that your game do not follow. For example there is a fixed structure that is not present in your case. You would have to document yourself about the rules in order to be able to hack them.

\n

I have a very rough understanding of QR code, but I guess your idea is possible while following all those rules. You might need to learn about the format and make a lot of trial an errors to keep your maze valid. I imagine a good start would be to use a generator to create a QR code with small content, in a relatively large version, with a high density error correction code. That way, you have plenty of pixels available that do not affect the content, and a bit of room to break the rules at occasions altering pixels that the ECC could recover. In this space, you could probably forge an interesting maze.

Thanks Jack, The Dash Thing was my attempt to make the game speedrun-able sort of like dashing in diagonal being overpowered i wanted to add a timer as well.. and thank you for your tips with the QR thing I plan on finishing this game (without a time limit) ill make sure to educate myself on it properly.

This is a pretty nice result for a first JS game! I would have liked the use of the theme more though, e.g. having a black cat face as the player character instead of just a box. The dash didn’t really add much, it just makes you a bit faster for a second. Also, I thought it was a good idea to display a QR code at the end for some reward but unfortunately it didn’t work on my phone.

\n

All in all, good job for the first attempt and good luck with your future games!

I like the unique concept of QR code! It’s a pity you started so late and were not able to add audio and polish the game. But it is very impressive to have created a first game so fast. See you next year with a AAA game :)

Really clever use of a QR code as a maze! Overall, we saw a very simple but neat concept.

\n

Unfortunately, the QR code generated after completing the levels didn’t scan properly with our iPhone cameras.

\n

If we were to apply the 80/20 rule to improvements, here’s what could make a big impact in our opinion:

\n\n

All in all, excellent work and a creative idea! And congratulations with you first game ever. We hope to see you next year!

It’s very impressive that you finished a game in time for the jam at all, with the time you had! The QR code didn’t work for me, I use IPHONE - and I do wish it did work. Otherwise, the game is simple, but it’s a maze that you can dash through, so what you are aiming for as well.

I’ve never seen a QR maze before! that’s actually really creative! If I were to add something, I think it would be great if you could add like an enemy/trap/powerups into it. Also, i don’t know if it’s just me but the qr didn’t work for me :( But you’ve done great considering the time you have to do the jam!

On level completion, I was really looking forward to seeing the black cat surprise when scanning the QR code, but it didn’t work on my Android device and saw your game description about it.
\nStill, it’s great that you were able to submit the game on time. I loved the concept, and I hope you’ll bring another awesome game next year!

Cool idea! If you want an extra challenge, you should try to generate mazes randomly so one can play forever.

This is an interesting idea for a game

\n

The maze worked well, and I’m glad you had a small hitbox for the player otherwise it would have taken ages to line up for the gaps

\n

None of the QR codes scanned for me, were they meant to?

\n

I didn’t really get the black cat theme with your game

The QR-Code as maze is a neat idea.
