While thinking about the theme of the 13th century, I thought about making a game related to the Mongol army. I was inspired by battles involving Mongol troops in the 13th century, including the Battle_of_Cheoin.

\n

Like a typical defense game, enemies (Mongolians) move along a set path. Eliminate enemies before they approach the gate.

\n

Movement is done using the arrow keys, and when leveling up, abilities are selected using the number keys 1, 2, and 3.

This was a pretty neat game, a bit like a one tower tower defense game. I feel that it could do with a bit more balancing though :)

Once I understood I only had to move, it became (too) easy…until level 5. The difficulty spike needs some balancing. I like that some arrows miss (specially horses), but perhaps not missing so much. I would also like to increase shooting speed - it seems impossible to beat.

I really liked the concept here! Similar to a Tower Defense, but you can move around and auto-shoot at anything within range. Being able to upgrade during each level was fun, and the graphics were perfectly fitting for this type of game. The only issue was the balance - the first 4 levels are very easy (I didn’t even have to move to complete level 4!), but level 5 was insane, unleashing a constant flow of baddies you couldn’t ever hope to defeat. I suspect the dev just ran out of time :) still a great concept, though!

There’s a lot of potential in this game. It feels like a mix between Vampire Survivors and a tower defense game.\nDifficulty was really low at the beginning, then I suddenly got swarmed by dozens of mounted knights and couldn’t do anything about it.

\n

Things that would take this game to the next level:

Great pixel artwork, interesting idea! I didn’t really have to do anything for the first 4 levels though, and then the 5th level completely overwhelmed me. I suspect the author ran out of time to do level design :)

It takes time to start being fun, as the first levels are just about staying on the corner of the map and do nothing.\nMoving your character should be part of fun, like adding stuff to pick up in your base.

I liked the idea and implementation! Good game!

\n

Unfortunately, the gameplay has slowed down a bit, the first 4 levels are easy, but after the 5th there are a lot of enemies, you don’t have time to physically hold a decent fight. A little balance - and I could still play for a long time :).

\n

Thanks and congratulations!

I think this is a great jam game. Good animation for the memory restriction. The movement of the horses felt great. My biggest suggestion would have been to add them earlier. The game scales pretty slowly, and then you are suddenly over run. I would have scaled a little bit faster. The first few levels I just sat in the one corner and no one got by. A second route for them to take might have helped encourage movement as well.

I enjoyed playing the game. Loved the graphics and galloping horses.

\n

At first I thought I could just place the defender at the top left and get power ups as I proceeded through the levels. But then horseback riders appeared and I needed to adjust my strategy.

\n

A fun game with replayability.

This game was so easy it auto-played itself if you stood on the top-left corner.

\n

Then the horses came and it became nearly impossible (especially if you don’t know what they’re coming).

\n

It needs a better difficulty curve (rather than a cliff).

\n

Otherwise, I always enjoy a tower-defense game. It would be quite enjoyable if not for the sudden difficulty.

Why not allow to click in the option?\nChose a targeting strategy is nice too. (weaker, stronger, faster, further, nearest…).\nThe theme is good, but the tower defense implementation and the usage of history features was low. You demonstrated potential.

The game is fun, difficulty ramps up quite fast.

\n

Love the autotargeting system mechanic and it could work very well with more sophisticated paths/entry points for enemies so you could bring strategy/depth without necessarily increasing the number of units.

13C Defense\nhttps://dev.js13kgames.com/2023/games/13c-defense\nHi there Kang!

\n

Great job on this game! Really enjoyed playing it and you did great work on a couple things:

\n
    \n
  1. Most notably, the rotation of the bow was very well done. It matched the enemy perfectly and was a good feature to introduce
  2. \n
  3. Simple controls were easy to use after a while.
  4. \n
  5. I liked the introduction of the additional enemy types
  6. \n
\n

For some improvements I could suggest

\n
    \n
  1. I’d suggest introducing different color scheme to the enemies with stronger life, that way it’s clear what type each are. When first playing myself and my wife didn’t realize that there were two types. If it’s included, it might be too small for us to see due to the pixelation
  2. \n
  3. It would be nice to introduce two entry points earlier. I found expanding the radius and damage to be OP by camping in the beginning.
  4. \n
\n

Overall, great game and great job! What’s next? Feel free to hit me up on Twitter/X @jedihacks to have a discussion!
