13 Curses is a card game where the first player to have exactly 13 curses loses.
\nA game of 13 Curses starts with each player drawing three cards into their hand.
\nThree cards are added to the shop at the start of each round. Any cards left in the the shop from the previous round are removed first.
\nPlayers take it in turns to act. The player with the most curses goes first each turn. A coin flip decides the order if each player has the same number of curses.
\nA dice is rolled by the player at the start of their turn. The result of the roll is added to the player’s points. The points gained are multiplied depending on how many curses the player has:
\nThe player can use these points to buy cards from the shop. Purchased cards are added to the player’s hand.
\nThe player can play any cards from their hand. Cards that would result in a negative number of curses, or curses over 16 for either player, may not be played.
The player can choose to end their turn without buying of playing any cards. The next player then has their turn. Once each player has had a turn, the round ends and another round starts.
\nOnce any player reaches exactly 13 curses, the game is over.
\n13 Curses uses on-screen buttons for all interactions. It can be played with a mouse or using a touchscreen.
\nThere are some additional gesture controls available when using a touchscreen:
\ninteresting card game, the curse mechanic is intriguing and add lot of depth to the game

\nMaybe my only concern is that after a while the game starts being repetitive, it needs something to be more exponential so it keeps getting faster.

\nSound effects are great! Controls are smooth. Took a couple of goes to get it, but rather intuitive once you get going. Is a game that could go for a VERY long time - lots of back and forth, need a faster way to end the game and have more rounds. Get stuck in a loop once past x2 etc. There’s no indication whether the person with the most points at the end wins or not. I got stuck in a loop and it steam rolls for one player or another.
\nThe points system, as well as curses system is rather unique. Very interesting game, but can get frustrated with the never ending cycle. It’s also interesting that what you’d consider a bad card, can be used for good. There’s no good or bad.
\nWasn’t clear what the skull symbol was for, but makes sense it means death, and you lose. Still not clear how to win the game - is it the most points once someone reaches 13? That would be too one sided. Great concept though and well executed.

Thanks for your submission to js13k!\nI’m sure you’ve worked hard on your game, but I’m not aware of how much time you spent on it, so excuse me if things I mention were in your mind, but got left out in the rush of the month or just because you hit the 13kb limit :)
\nWell done. The “who goes first” system is great for keeping the game balanced. The 2x, 3x, 4x multipliers also add an interesting strategic option. The AI was relatively straightforward (understandably). It would be fun to play this human-vs-human, and to see people flirt with danger in the 3x and 4x zone. Great job!

Guess I should have read the instructions first but hey, it didn’t take too long to get a grasp of what was going on. It was quite tedious and repetitive before I figured out that I should just rush to at least 2x and completely dominate the picks, slowly amassing a hand that and deliver a 1-hit-ko. Trying to just slowly build the opponent curses pretty much ends up in a stale mate where neither is doing anything.
\nEvery other mechanic was quite clear after playing around a bit but the 2x/3x/4x thing could have been clearer. Didn’t quite pay enough attention to enemy cash increases on my first try to notice that the roll value was getting multiplied each time before it kinda got out of hand. And my going to 4x gambit failed as the opponent was sitting on a perfect card to minus me back to skull.
\nIt looked and sounded pretty nice. Obviously some music would have been welcome and the text on cards was fairly small to read on a laptop screen. I’m guessing it’s unreadable on mobile.
\nThe game pace could be increased quite a bit in my opinion. The 13 curses seemed quite a lot and resulted in a lot of boring nothing happening 50% of the game. Even if you like to keep the thematic 13 goal, you could increase the amount of curses each card added to pick up the pace. And not having access to +/- 1 would make it more interesting in the risk vs reward department too.
\nThe add curse to yourself cards weren’t really worth it. They could be a lot cheaper in my opinion. And the +money ones were kinda bland. There was no reason not to get and use one if you could afford it. At least the minus ones needed some timing to get the full potential out of them.

\nGood graphics and animations.
\nI’m glad the game pretty much played itself.
\nSome of the interactions were a little complicated. But there was lots of variety in the curses. So no two games are the same.
\nOverall a fun game

\nThe computer strategy could be improved a bit though, while playing first it left me with a winning move using a card from the shop that it could have bought.
\nAn extra request, can the text be readable even when the card is minimized ?
\nOtherwise, great game, and as other reviewers mentioned, it could easily be turned into a tabletop card game to play with friends.

With new graphics etc. I could see this turning into a full game!
\nEspecially enjoyed the programmatic visuals and animations. Felt very retro. Nice work!
