In the wake of the cataclysmic eruption of 1257 in Lombok you find yourself standing amidst the fiery chaos and smouldering ashes. As a time traveler, you face not just the relentless force of nature, but an enigmatic and malevolent AI that awoke in the volcano, seeking to plunge the world into a chilling 700-year ice age. Your only allies in this desperate quest are the mystical Banyan trees, ancient guardians of balance. Harness their sacred power, challenge the wrath of the volcano, and thwart the plans of the AI, Abyssus. The fate of epochs rests in your hands.

Update: after checking the video and playing again (on Desktop) now I understand what’s the game about and I like the concept very much (works much better on VR). It is a nice 1 v 1 on a spherical battlefield\nneeds some polishing, but the concept is great!

Great game. One mechanic but executed very well!\nDifficult because you keep having to turn around but even that fits well with this game. The swarms are very cool and the little growing trees look very nice. Quick action, don’t give the other side a chance to take the platforms that you already have (and to which your back is turned). Nice music as well.

\n

Very little to complain about except that the controls are a bit rough. You might spend 10 seconds trying to get hold of a platform and point at another. Lack of feedback (pointing ray, whether a platform is selected or not, selection / turning sounds) is frustrating at times, especially in a game where speed of action is of the essence.

\n

Very good!

Thanks so much for playing! I’ve read your feedback, took it seriously, and tweaked a bunch of things, including targeting and selection visibility, in a post-competition edition of the game, which lives at https://1k257.com.

\n

That release is above 13kb, as I’ve added levels and also significantly improved the graphics & fixed a subtle aspect of the background music, where a fairly funky but super relaxing wave generator is now working (it shipped with the original game, but a paths issue prevented it from being loaded).

\n

Don’t let it influence the rating of this entry, but if you liked this one, I’d be excited to hear what you have to say about the improved version!

Very interesting game! And impressive implementation and animations. The music and sound design makes a lot of sense for the vibe of the game.

I really like the concept, the game is addicitve, animations are very well done and I enjoyed playing!\nMaybe you could add some levels with different world size / stucture / shape.\nGreat job, I loved this game!

Hey! Thanks for playing and your very kind words - it’s so encouraging to hear from players who enjoy it!

\n

I’ve listened to your feedback and added a few levels, as an experiment, to a post-competition version of the game which lives at https://1k257.com. That version is above 13kb, however, as it includes numerous other improvements as well, so don’t let it influence your opinion about this entry. Hope you have fun if you do end up playing it!

\n

In that version you can also move around in VR with your thumbstick, which is quite necessary especially in the large field level. Lots of fun, though :)

Very nice execution, working smoothly with a chill music in the background. I’ve seen this concept in a 2D game but was yet to experience it in 3D and it was satisfying! The game is connected with the theme enough through the story explanation - it reads a bit artificial to me, but it is a game about beating an ancient AI and it works pretty well. Good job!

Thank you for playing and the kind words! The theme aspect is definitely walking on an edge, but to my defence I started out with castles and knights (as evidenced by some early WIP submissions on Slack :)), but then wanted to do something different compared to what I expected the most commonly applied flavour of the 13th century would be.

\n

The volcano eruption, the ice age, it’s all true and historical, I just inserted an AI in there. Not sure if your “artificial” comment was a pun, but I love it. :D At one point I was even emulating an Indonesian gamelan orchestra to produce the music, but it was quite difficult to capture the richness of those sounds (doubly difficult since it’s not using a western scale for notes), so I opted for something simpler.

\n

So yes, I’m pushing the theme’s envelope quite a bit, but hopefully it’s clear that it is intentional, not due to lack of effort and not ill-willed.

\n

Thanks again for your thoughts, much appreciated!

Very unique! I like the feeling of having to monitor the enemy movement and figuring out how many to send, and then doing the quick calculations in your head of what you can commit. The only trouble I had was occasionally targeting what I wanted to, especially some of the far away platforms.

Great game. Fantastic intro, love the tree theme and zen music. A very entertaining immersive experience. Addition of a exit/reload button would be handy.

Well, hard to imagine relation to 13th cent)\nMore like starships battle)

\n

But as a game it’s not bad, classical Eiphoria/nanowars/“galcon” like strategy in 3d.\nAs for me, there are too many islands and it’s really hard to understand situation.\nOnly a little Dummy AI give you option to win.\nThere are some interesting effects and good sound.

\n

Good Job!

Simple but effective !

\n

The game would benefit from a bit more polish at the UX level but I am still hooked and coming back to it with pleasure.

\n

This is the kind of tiny addictive game I could definitely play on mobile :-) but I have to admit it is way more interesting in VR.

\n

Thanks for explaining the relation to the themes in the description as I would have not necessarily get it otherwise.

\n

Well done on your submission.

Thanks for the kind words, Sebastien! Agreed on UX lacking polish - whole thing started as a tech demo for fully async GPU compute, or how many bodies can fit into a N-body simulation where they all interact with each other & it runs great on a standalone Quest 2. I stopped at 4096, since it was sufficient for gameplay, but there’s wiggle room.\nNext up was a custom procedural music engine, since most things I tried lacked the sort of timbre/depth I wanted. After that was an audio worklet demo, where the envelope used within is passed via a message & evaled in the worklet (due to its size), used to generate the sound of waves, which does not work in this release due to a paths issue. It does work in the updated post-compo version: 1k257.com.\nThen banyan trees proc gen & animations for it that make sense, then cross-platform, then custom really fast text rendering…\nAfter all this it was 8 minutes to deadline & right at the edge of 13kb! Hm, would probably be better to start with UX… :)
